Racing Incident Report

DASHING WINNER began awkwardly with its head up, then shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between HAPPY MOMENTUM and OCELOT which got its head on the side and shifted in. ROOSEVELT was slow to begin. CALIFORNIA HAWK began awkwardly, got its head up, then was bumped by SOLID CONTACT which shifted in after being bumped by SHAXI FORTUNE. PLANET RULER, which was to be ridden in a rearward position today from the outside barrier, was immediately steadied on jumping and taken back across the field behind runners. In the early stages, OCELOT, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head on the side and hung in away from SUMMERLAND. After the 800 Metres, CALIFORNIA HAWK raced wide and without cover. Prior to straightening, HAPPY MOMENTUM was steadied away from the heels of PLANET RULER. Making the Home Turn, DASHING WINNER hung out. After the 200 Metres, SHAXI FORTUNE shifted to the inside of CALIFORNIA HAWK which shifted out. At the 50 Metres, ROOSEVELT was momentarily crowded for room by HAPPY MOMENTUM which shifted in abruptly. F Coetzee (CALIFORNIA HAWK) explained the horse pulls very hard when being ridden at track work and he had also viewed videos of the horse when it raced before it came to Hong Kong and he said on those occasions the horse over-raced badly. He said because of this today as it was at its first start in Hong Kong he was instructed to ride the horse with cover if possible, however, the manner in which the race was run allowed GREAT DELIGHT and THE DUKE to establish a large break of the field around the Home Turn and as nothing carried him forward into the race he was further off the lead than he would have liked on straightening. He said the circumstances of today's race clearly went against the racing pattern of CALIFORNIA HAWK. CALIFORNIA HAWK was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, CALIFORNIA HAWK was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. THE DUKE and GREAT DELIGHT were sent for sampling.
