Racing Incident Report

While the field was parading behind the barriers and before any horse had been loaded, the bell which signifies the start of a race sounded due to a technical malfunction. On jumping, SPINNING CITY threw its head about. SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. On jumping, DESERT STORM shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of SUN SHINE RIVER. From a gate towards the outside, SILVERBIRD was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but near the rear. In the early stages, FIVE GRAINS and PERFECT proved difficult to settle. After the 1400 Metres, FORTUNE BOY got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of FORTUNE SMILES. Near the 1100 Metres, SUN SHINE RIVER broke down and was eased out of the race. Near the 600 Metres, FIVE GRAINS was steadied away from the heels of TRIUMPHANT GLORY which shifted to the outside of ASALI. After this, FIVE GRAINS was awkwardly placed close to the heels of TRIUMPHANT GLORY and unable to improve for some distance. From on straightening until after the 200 Metres, FORTUNE SMILES was unable to obtain clear running when behind SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT and inside LUCKY SIXER. Shortly after straightening, FIVE GRAINS was steadied and shifted in when disappointed for running between GOOD FIT and TRIUMPHANT GLORY. W M Lai (DESERT STORM) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 400 Metres he shifted his mount out when not clear of TRIUMPHANT GLORY, causing that horse to be carried out across the rightful running of GOOD FIT which as a result was checked. Having regard for W M Lai's disciplinary record in relation to careless riding this season, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was for his licence to ride in races to be suspended until Sunday 21 December 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (5 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Wednesday 3 December 2003. At the 200 Metres, LUCKY SIXER, which was giving ground, was checked to avoid the heels of SUCCESSFUL SPIRIT (R Fradd) which when giving ground shifted out. The Stewards were satisfied R Fradd had attempted to straighten his mount and therefore no action was taken. Near the 100 Metres, DESERT STORM was checked when crowded for room between SPINNING CITY which had its head on the side and shifted in and FORTUNE BOY which after initially being taken out by SILVERBIRD shifted further away from that horse. In the circumstances, no action was taken. LUCKY SIXER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of LUCKY SIXER after the race did not reveal any significant findings. SPINNING CITY and SILVERBIRD were sent for sampling.
