Racing Incident Report

On the way to the Start, at about the 700 Metres, NATURAL MODEL refused to proceed further. D Whyte dismounted from NATURAL MODEL and led the horse to about the 1000 Metres where he again remounted and then proceeded to the Start being led by an attendant. RAINBOW DIAMOND was slow to begin. NATURAL MODEL began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. After the 1000 Metres, TROPHY was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between HK ISLAND VICTORY and ZERO IN which shifted in slightly. After the 900 Metres, ZERO IN, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. At the same time, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY became unbalanced behind after being brushed by ETERNAL START. Approaching the 800 Metres, NATURAL MODEL got its head up and hung in. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, HK ISLAND VICTORY, which for some distance had been proving very difficult to settle, was checked when awkwardly placed close to the heels of ETERNAL START which shifted in when not properly clear. Crowding was caused to GOOD GOOD which was racing to the inside of HK ISLAND VICTORY. As the Stewards were satisfied HK ISLAND VICTORY had contributed to this incident, no action was taken. On straightening, ZERO IN brushed with WINNING PARADE, then in the early part of the Straight got its head on the side and was inclined to hang out. At the 200 Metres, NATURAL MODEL, which was beginning to close off, was steadied when disappointed for running between ETERNAL START and HK ISLAND VICTORY, both of which were giving ground. Y T Cheng (DYNAMIC POWER) explained he had ridden the horse along in the early part of the Straight, then for some distance after the 200 Metres he steadied away from the heels of ETERNAL START which was giving ground in front of him. He said by the time he was able to shift to the outside of that horse, it was after the 100 Metres and then just prior to the winning post he again was awkwardly placed when close to the heels of HK ISLAND VICTORY and for these reasons he did not ride his horse out to the line as he normally would. When questioned regarding the improved performance of UPBEAT, Trainer J Size said in his opinion the horse despite racing regularly had not been concentrating in its races. He said therefore it was decided to add blinkers to UPBEAT in the hope the horse would become more focused. He said with the addition of blinkers to the horse today, UPBEAT had raced more truly and in his opinion this variance to the horse's racing gear accounted for its improved performance. W Smith (ENAMELLED) said he had been riding the horse in its work leading up to today's race, in his opinion this work was good and the horse was therefore thought to have a good chance in the race by the stable. He said today he had been instructed to ride the horse "box seat", however, at no stage of the race did ENAMELLED travel as he thought it would, got well back and failed to finish the race off. The performance of ENAMELLED was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, ENAMELLED will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ENAMELLED was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of ENAMELLED after the race did not show any significant findings. ZERO IN, UPBEAT and SMILING FOREST were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted ETERNAL START had sustained a laceration to the outside of the left hind cannon.
