Racing Incident Report

A PLUS FIT was withdrawn on 23.1.04 on veterinary grounds (lame left hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter LUCKY MASTER (W Smith). Before being allowed to race again, A PLUS FIT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After leaving the mounting enclosure, MYTHIC STEED dislodged Apprentice P H Lo, its rider, and continued for a short distance towards the Start riderless. MYTHIC STEED was then recaptured by an outrider and was being led to the Start before breaking free near the 800 Metres. MYTHIC STEED was again recaptured and taken to the Start where it was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. Apprentice P H Lo was uninjured when being dislodged from MYTHIC STEED. Mr D Hill, the trainer of MYTHIC STEED, undertook to familiarize the horse with being led by a pony in the morning track work in the hope of rectifying its behaviour. On this undertaking, the Stewards told Mr Hill that they would take no action other than issuing a warning against the horse and should it perform similarly again in the future, action may be taken. After being boxed, NEVER SO YOUNG became fractious and when the gates opened began awkwardly and lost ground. Shortly after the start, GRASS HOPPER and RECOVERY bumped heavily as a result of GRASS HOPPER being carried in after bumping with SCREAMING EAGLE which on jumping shifted in and RECOVERY which shifted out after being brushed by LUCKY MASTER. After the 800 Metres, SCREAMING EAGLE shifted a significant amount of ground towards the inside rail while hanging. Near the 500 Metres, HANDBAG PREMIER was steadied when crowded for room between BRILLIANT and SALENTINO which was carried in slightly by SCREAMING EAGLE (W M Lai) which continued to shift in despite W M Lai's efforts to straighten his mount. A Marcus (HANDBAG FORTUNE) was unable to offer any explanation for the horse's poor performance. He said it had been decided to ride the horse with cover as in the past it had shown a tendency to over-race. He said HANDBAG FORTUNE travelled satisfactorily in the early stages of the race with cover, however, when asked to improve near the 500 Metres the horse immediately commenced to hang out from behind SCREAMING EAGLE. He said this caused some inconvenience to LUCKY MASTER which was racing to his outside, he therefore straightened HANDBAG FORTUNE up, commenced to ride it along, however, it failed to quicken. He said he had ridden HANDBAG FORTUNE in a barrier trial leading into today's race and in his opinion this trial was only satisfactory. Mr T W Leung, the trainer of HANDBAG FORTUNE, confirmed the riding instructions issued to A Marcus and said in his opinion it was important for the horse to be ridden with cover as in the past it had not closed its races off as anticipated when being ridden further forward. He said he was unable to offer any explanation for the horse's performance, however, he did state HANDBAG FORTUNE was well fancied by the stable today. The explanations submitted by A Marcus and Mr Leung were noted. HANDBAG FORTUNE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. GRASS HOPPER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of HANDBAG FORTUNE and GRASS HOPPER after the race did not show any significant findings. SOUTHERN LIGHT and KING OF GAROUPA were sent for sampling.
