Racing Incident Report

LIGHT FOOT and GOOD FIT were slow to begin. On jumping, THE PIONEER bounded in the air. KINDRED SPIRITS was a little slow to begin, then shortly afterwards was steadied when crowded for room between GREEN IN BLUE and HAPPY CONTENDER, both of which shifted ground. Making the turn at the 1800 Metres, ZERUBBABEL was momentarily crowded for room inside SPECIFIC SORCEROR. At the 800 Metres, GOOD FIT was bumped and carried wider by ZERUBBABEL when that horse shifted to the outside of GREEN IN BLUE. Shortly after straightening, RICARDO was shifted to the outside of DEEP PURPLE to find clear running. For some distance after the 200 Metres, MONZA KING had difficulty obtaining clear running behind GREEN IN BLUE and inside CHATER LANE. At about the 150 Metres, ZERUBBABEL and CHATER LANE bumped. Shortly after this, ZERUBBABEL became unbalanced when again bumped by CHATER LANE which on this occasion shifted out after being brushed by MONZA KING which improved outside GREEN IN BLUE. Near the 100 Metres, RICARDO and DEEP PURPLE (A Marcus) became unbalanced as a result of DEEP PURPLE shifting out and bumping RICARDO. A Marcus was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion. Shortly after this, RICARDO shifted in and bumped DEEP PURPLE. C Williams (UNIVERSAL CHARGER) said when he rode the horse at its last start at Happy Valley it did not appear comfortable racing inside other horses on the turning track. He said today he had been instructed to ride the horse in a rearward position and ensure he came to the outside of other horses to make his run. He said UNIVERSAL CHARGER travelled well throughout today's race and raced inside other horses without any concern. He said in the Straight UNIVERSAL CHARGER responded strongly to his riding. He said he had not ridden UNIVERSAL CHARGER in any of its work after its last start, however, in his opinion the horse had improved in its appearance in the Parade Ring today. As Trainer Y O Wong had left the course, the Stewards will offer him an opportunity of explaining what appeared to be an improved performance by UNIVERSAL CHARGER before concluding the matter. F Coetzee (ZERUBBABEL) explained running along the Back Straight on about three occasions he became awkwardly placed close to the heels of GREEN IN BLUE when following that horse. He said because of this when he again was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GREEN IN BLUE he shifted his mount out from behind that horse to give him room to improve as ZERUBBABEL has shown itself to be a horse which takes time to wind up in its races and he wanted to ensure he had clear running to do so. He said when he did this CHATER LANE immediately shifted from the fence to a position behind GREEN IN BLUE. F Coetzee was told his explanation would be recorded. CHATER LANE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of CHATER LANE after the race did not show any significant findings. ZERUBBABEL, UNIVERSAL CHARGER and GREEN IN BLUE were sent for sampling.
