Racing Incident Report

After entering the track, W Smith was dislodged from NEW PLANET. After being remounted, NEW PLANET made contact with the outside running rail. After arriving at the Start, NEW PLANET was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said following the necessary consultations the horse was suitable to race. When the gates opened, NEW PLANET immediately veered left and refused to take part in the race. Mr D Hill, the trainer of NEW PLANET, said he would discuss with the owners of NEW PLANET their intentions for the horse in the future. The Stewards advised Mr Hill they would await being informed of the outcome of these discussions before considering whether any action should be taken. SUPER BLITZ was slow to begin and then on jumping bumped the outside gate of its stall. KEEN MARSHAL was slow to muster speed. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, LUCKY STALLION was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of BOLD WINNER which momentarily shifted in. Prior to straightening, SPARKLING STAR was bumped by DELIGHTFUL WIN which was shifting out in an endeavour to find clear running. On straightening, KINGFIELD was hampered and carried wider by WYNDAM EASY which was shifted out. Shortly after straightening, NOBLE CHAMPION was steadied and shifted in to obtain clear running. After the 300 Metres, SPARKLING STAR was held up and unable to improve when racing behind AFRICAN FOREST and outside the heels of DELIGHTFUL WIN. Approaching the 200 Metres, SUPER BLITZ was held up and unable to improve when awkwardly placed outside the heels of AMBITIOUS TYCOON. After the 200 Metres, SUPER BLITZ was shifted to the inside of AMBITIOUS TYCOON to obtain clear running. Near the 100 Metres, BOLD WINNER was momentarily crowded for room between DELIGHTFUL WIN and LUCKY STALLION which shifted out slightly. D Boeuf (BOLD WINNER) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse with cover, therefore approaching the 800 Metres after WYNDAM EASY had gone forward to lead, he elected to come back and follow FORTUNE SMILES in the run to carry out his riding instructions. D Dunn (WYNDAM EASY) explained because of the manner in which the track had been racing, he was instructed to ensure he shifted away from the fence and made his run wide on the track. He said when he had ridden WYNDAM EASY previously, the horse had hung in quite badly, therefore he elected not to shift to the fence in the middle stages as in his opinion the horse would have proved difficult to shift away from the fence in the Straight to carry out his instructions. He said in the Straight WYNDAM EASY hung in and proved difficult to ride. S Dye (FORTUNE SMILES) said it was anticipated the horse would handle today's wet track and it moved nicely during its preliminary. He said about 300 Metres after the start he became concerned FORTUNE SMILES did not appear to be handling the ground, was over-racing which it had a history of doing and then in the Straight did not finish the race off. He said he did not ride the horse out with the whip, but rode it hard hands and heels. S Dye did point out FORTUNE SMILES does seem to appreciate racing at Happy Valley, however, in his opinion today's track conditions was a major factor on the horse's performance. FORTUNE SMILES was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, FORTUNE SMILES was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. WYNDAM EASY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of WYNDAM EASY after the race did not show any significant findings. NOBLE CHAMPION, DELIGHTFUL WIN and LUCKY STALLION were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 9 February 2004)
FORTUNE SMILES, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. FORTUNE SMILES was again examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison at the stables of Trainer J Size yesterday. He said at this time the horse had swelling to the upper, outer left hind cannon. Before being allowed to race again, FORTUNE SMILES will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
