Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, HIP HIP HOORAY bounded in the air and was slow to begin. GOOD MOOD was slow to begin. In the middle stages, GOOD MOOD hung in and after the 800 Metres was steadied away from the heels of TAKING THE LEAD which shifted out away from NOBLE VICTORY. Prior to straightening, A-TACK was momentarily crowded for room inside GOOD MOOD which shifted in. Also prior to straightening, NICKU NICKU was steadied when momentarily awkwardly placed inside the heels of GOOD MOOD which was hanging in. Shortly after straightening, TAKING THE LEAD was disappointed for running between HEALTHY HEART and NOBLE VICTORY which at the time got its head on the side and hung out. To obtain running, TAKING THE LEAD was steadied and shifted to the outside of FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. In the Straight, NOBLE VICTORY continued to hang out and proved difficult to ride. For the major part of the race, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY raced wide and without cover. Mr A T Millard (TIMBER CITY) explained he instructed Apprentice H W Lai, the horse's rider, to go forward and if possible he was satisfied for TIMBER CITY to lead. He said he made this decision in view of the horse only carrying 103 lbs today with the apprentice allowance. He said he did not notify his intention to go forward as he was concerned with the horse dropping back to 1200 Metres and with Apprentice Lai having his first day race riding in Hong Kong, he was not sure whether his intentions would be able to be carried out. Mr Millard said if the horse does race over a further distance at its next start, it may be that the horse will be ridden with cover as today when leading it got tired in the final stages. The Stewards advised Mr Millard that even having considered his reasoning for not advising TIMBER CITY would go forward today, clearly he has a responsibility to ensure wherever possible all horses are ridden in a consistent manner. Apprentice H W Lai (TIMBER CITY) was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels to the winning post. Prior to weighed-in being semaphored, the Stewards considered an application from M Cahill (KING OF GAROUPA) to be declared a non-runner as in his opinion the horse had had an unfair start. Evidence was taken from M Cahill, Mr Y O Wong, the trainer of KING OF GAROUPA and all the official videos of the start were reviewed. The evidence disclosed that KING OF GAROUPA, which had been loaded last, was fractious after being boxed, then as the gates opened put its head down, resulting in M Cahill becoming badly unbalanced and the horse consequently losing a significant amount of ground at the start. In the opinion of the Stewards, KING OF GAROUPA had not had an unfair start and therefore was deemed to be a runner. Accordingly, weighed-in was semaphored on the Judge's numbers. Before being allowed to race again, KING OF GAROUPA will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. NICKU NICKU was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, NICKU NICKU was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, NICKU NICKU will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After the race, D Whyte reported that NOBLE VICTORY was not striding out freely. NOBLE VICTORY was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. Also after the race, G Schofield said FUN CRUISER was making an abnormal breathing noise. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed that FUN CRUISER had a possible pharyngeal collapse. HIP HIP HOORAY, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY and TAKING THE LEAD were sent for sampling.
