Racing Incident Report

SPLENDID PATROL began awkwardly and blundered. WINTROW began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. GIBSON began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall, causing J Didham, its rider, to become unbalanced. In the early stages, ANALYST hung in, placing C Soumillon, its rider, at a disadvantage. After the 1400 Metres, ANALYST proved very difficult to settle and for some distance got its head up when racing close to the heels of SIROCCO. Also after the 1400 Metres, CROWN'S GIFT, which was racing without cover, proved difficult to settle, then near the 1000 Metres was allowed to stride forward to join the lead. In the middle stages, ROYAL TREASURE hung in and near the 700 Metres bumped the running rail. Also in the middle stages, SPLENDID PATROL hung out. On straightening, WINTROW was bumped and carried wider by ROYAL TREASURE which shifted out. For some distance after straightening, SIROCCO raced tight between SPLENDID PATROL which was giving ground and RIVER DANCER which had improved into a narrow run on the inside of CROWN'S GIFT which on straightening shifted out. In the Straight, CHEEKY hung in and proved difficult to ride. BLUE STITCH was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. When questioned, S Dye (WINTROW) said the intention had been for WINTROW to be ridden in a forward position. He said WINTROW began awkwardly and hit the inside gate of its barrier, causing it to lose a little ground at the start. He immediately rode it in an attempt to go forward, however, the horse was not properly balanced as a result of it beginning awkwardly and at the same time ANALYST which had drawn outside him shifted in, causing him to be awkwardly placed close to the heels of that runner. He said as a result of this, he did not have the opportunity to ride WINTROW in a forward position. He then allowed WINTROW to become balanced, at the 1400 Metres was crowded for room between ROYAL TREASURE and HELENE MOMENTUM which had come back behind ANALYST. He said as a result of these incidents, WINTROW was much further back than intended. He then elected to follow HELENE MOMENTUM in a position two wide but with cover. He said the only other alternative would have been for him to shift out, race three wide without cover and he did not think this was in the best interest of the horse. He said after the 600 Metres he commenced to ride WINTROW along hands and heels and on straightening he was carried wider by ROYAL TREASURE which shifted out on his inside. He said in the Straight he rode WINTROW out, whilst the horse did make some ground, it did not close off as he would have expected, particularly over the final 100 Metres of the race where despite his riding it failed to make any real impression on those runners in front of him. S Dye was told his explanation for being further back than intended in the early stages would be recorded. After the race, BLUE STITCH was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, BLUE STITCH will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Also after the race, SPLENDID PATROL was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, SPLENDID PATROL will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WINTROW, CROWN'S GIFT and GIFT were sent for sampling.
