Racing Incident Report

SUPER WINNER and FREE WAY were slow to begin. SPOKESMAN began awkwardly. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, SUPER WINNER hung out. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres and at the Home Turn, BEAMING RIVER hung out. Approaching the turn at the 600 Metres, GOOD FRIENDS lost its position when racing tight inside HONOURABLE which shifted in slightly. KING PALM and FORTUNE MAPLE, which were following, were hampered in consequence. Before straightening, SUPER WINNER was steadied away from the heels of FORTUNE MAPLE. Throughout the race, HIGH PRICE raced wide and without cover. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in while they considered whether MASCOT had had an unfair start. The official videos of the start were reviewed. Apprentice M W Leung, the rider of MASCOT, was interviewed. It was established momentarily before the gates opened, MASCOT, which had been fractious, reared and consequently lost a significant amount of ground at the start. In those circumstances, the Stewards believed MASCOT had not had an unfair start and therefore was deemed to be a runner. MASCOT then trailed the field throughout and finished distanced. MASCOT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of MASCOT after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of MASCOT was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MASCOT will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. S Dye (NEW MILESTONE) said he had hoped to ride the horse in 4th or 5th position. He said NEW MILESTONE, which was having its first start at Happy Valley, began only fairly, then in the early stages hung in which prevented him from riding along to go forward. He said near the 1100 Metres after being crossed by SPOKESMAN, he rode NEW MILESTONE along , it momentarily got its head up and became unbalanced. He said then making the turn at the 1000 Metres when he continued to ride NEW MILESTONE along, it again became unbalanced and on this occasion blundered. He said after this he allowed NEW MILESTONE to be properly balanced and as a result continued to race in a rearward position. He said approaching the turn at the 600 Metres NEW MILESTONE again hung in, then making the turn shifted out and bumped BEAMING RIVER. He said in the Straight NEW MILESTONE finished the race off fairly. The explanation of S Dye was accepted. R Fradd (FORTUNE MAPLE) explained making the turn near the 1000 Metres he steadied his mount which had been racing three wide and then shifted in to follow SPOKESMAN. He said he believed it was in the best interest of FORTUNE MAPLE to race in a two wide position on tonight's track. The explanation of R Fradd was accepted. SWISS LAD and KING PALM were sent for sampling.
