Racing Incident Report

SUCCESSIVE GAINS, first Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 30.4.04 on veterinary grounds (lame right hind). Before being permitted to race again, SUCCESSIVE GAINS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. DESERT STORM and GLOBAL FORTUNE were slow to begin. Near the 1100 Metres, GRAND FIGHTER was bumped by TRUST ME which was carried in by RUN AND WIN. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, GLOBAL FORTUNE and COLOURFUL ERA bumped and became unbalanced. In the middle stages, PICTURE PERFECT hung out. At the 700 Metres, BEST FOR ALL and GRAND FIGHTER were crowded for room between PICTURE PERFECT which shifted out when hanging and RUN AND WIN which was racing tight inside NOBLE CRUSADER. At the 600 Metres, ALL THE BEST hung out. After the 200 Metres, ENGINEERING WONDER, which was closing the race off fairly, was steadied and shifted to the outside of the heels of GRAND FIGHTER which when giving ground shifted out. K S Yu (KALIMANTAN) explained he had been instructed from the outside barrier to ride the horse with cover if possible in about midfield and then come to the outside in the Home Straight. He said on jumping he rode along, however, KALIMANTAN failed to muster speed and horses which had drawn to his inside went forward, he therefore elected to shift KALIMANTAN across behind runners to a position closer to the fence. He said approaching the 800 Metres he again rode along in the hope of improving his position, however, KALIMANTAN did not respond and as a consequence travelled much further back than he had hoped. The explanation submitted by K S Yu was accepted. Mr C H Yip, the trainer of BRAVE KNIGHT, said after the horse raced disappointedly on 10 January 2004, he gave it a let-up. He said at the horse's next start it performed well, however, at its most recent start on 14 April 2004 which was on the All Weather Track, he was required to use a replacement rider as his declared jockey had become indisposed. He said in that race BRAVE KNIGHT had drawn gate 12, was obliged to race wide throughout and was most disappointing. He said he was unable to offer any explanation for that performance. He said today BRAVE KNIGHT again raced wide but did have cover and was suited by the quick tempo of the race. He said he had not altered the track work of BRAVE KNIGHT, but he did move the horse from the All Weather surface to the turf in the hope this change would bring about an improved performance. Mr Yip was unable to offer any explanation for the improved performance of BRAVE KNIGHT today and did say he had advised the connections of the horse that in his opinion it had little chance. Mr Yip was told the recent inconsistent form of BRAVE KNIGHT was of concern to the Stewards and he should do his utmost to ensure the horse races consistently into the future. A Marcus (NOBLE CRUSADER) said the horse began only fairly from its wide barrier, he rode along in the early stages to go forward as he felt the horse had a natural speed to lead the race. He said as he rode along, RUN AND WIN and GRAND FIGHTER which he had anticipated would go forward, maintained their positions towards his inside and those horses were racing to the outside of BEST FOR ALL and PICTURE PERFECT. He said near the 800 Metres he was about three quarters of a length in front of RUN AND WIN, therefore was not clear to shift in at that time and he considered if he had persevered going forward, he would have to make too much use of NOBLE CRUSADER to clear runners to his inside and therefore he remained racing wide. He said for him to have come back to follow RUN AND WIN with cover, he would have had to unnecessarily restrain NOBLE CRUSADER which in his opinion would not have been a benefit to the horse. He said he therefore despite being concerned continued to race wide outside the lead, but attempted to let NOBLE CRUSADER travel comfortably underneath him. He said after the 500 Metres NOBLE CRUSADER hung out and because of this prior to straightening he changed the whip into his left hand. He said in the early part of the Straight he endeavoured to sit quietly on NOBLE CRUSADER in the hope that he would be able to conserve the horse's energy. He said after the 300 Metres he rode NOBLE CRUSADER along, the horse responded well initially, however, over the concluding stages the hard run the horse had took its toll and the horse kept on only one-paced in the run to the line. A Marcus was told his explanation would be recorded. NOBLE CRUSADER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of NOBLE CRUSADER after the race did not show any significant findings. BRAVE KNIGHT and ALL THE BEST were sent for sampling.
