Racing Incident Report

SMART WIN was withdrawn on 1.6.04 with permission of the Stewards (family bereavement) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter NEW FACE. CHERISHED was slow to begin. TRICCOLO began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. On jumping, ARMONDO and EAST OCEAN DRAGON bumped. Near the winning post on the first occasion, INDUSTRIAL PRIDE, which was being ridden along to make up ground, was checked when crowded for room between SHINING DRAGON which at this time got its head up and CLASSA VICTORY (Apprentice H W Lai) which shifted in after initially being clear. In the opinion of the Stewards, the manner in which INDUSTRIAL PRIDE had improved to the inside of CLASSA VICTORY had contributed to this incident, therefore no action was taken, however, Apprentice Lai was advised to do his utmost to protect his fellow riders. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, RISING WIN got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of EAST OCEAN DRAGON which was steadying to avoid ARMONDO. Near the 1300 Metres, ARMONDO was steadied away from the heels of REWARD which after crossing to the fence in the lead steadied the pace. Also near the 1300 Metres, SHINING DRAGON, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up and shifted out away from the heels of CLASSA VICTORY. Some inconvenience was caused in consequence to INDUSTRIAL PRIDE and PARADIS. At the 1200 Metres, RISING WIN was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of EAST OCEAN DRAGON. For some distance after this, RISING WIN continued to prove difficult to settle and raced close to the heels of EAST OCEAN DRAGON. After the 300 Metres, EAST OCEAN DRAGON was steadied and shifted to the outside of SHINING DRAGON to obtain clear running, then after the 200 Metres was shifted back to the inside of that horse which at that time shifted out. After the 200 Metres, CLASSA VICTORY when being ridden out shifted wider on the track. In the Straight, REWARD hung out. Throughout the race, NEW FACE raced wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. NEW FACE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, NEW FACE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, NEW FACE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. W Woods (SHINING DRAGON) said he had been instructed to lead on the horse if possible. He said just prior to the start SHINING DRAGON became a little fractious and as a consequence as the gates opened began only fairly. He said he immediately decided not to ride SHINING DRAGON along as he was concerned it would commence to over-race as it had done badly at its previous start when taken on in the lead. He said he therefore allowed SHINING DRAGON to obtain a trail in the run and consequently the horse was able to finish tonight's race off nicely. The explanation submitted by W Woods was accepted. D Whyte (INDUSTRIAL PRIDE) said the horse was slow to begin, then met interference near the winning post on the first occasion, however, afterwards travelled comfortably with cover despite being three wide. He said in the Straight INDUSTRIAL PRIDE did not finish the race off and whilst he was unable to say how significant the impact of the interference the horse received in the run was, the horse's performance in his opinion was most disappointing. INDUSTRIAL PRIDE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of INDUSTRIAL PRIDE after the race did not show any significant findings. C Williams (CHERISHED), 6th placegetter, pleaded guilty to a charge of having failed to ride his mount out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards [Rule 100(2)]. For this breach, C Williams was fined $20,000. ARMONDO and CLASSA VICTORY were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 3 June 2004)
INDUSTRIAL PRIDE, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. INDUSTRIAL PRIDE was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C H Yip this morning. He said at this time the horse was found to have a strain of the left front tendon. Before being allowed to race again, INDUSTRIAL PRIDE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
