Racing Incident Report

SOUTHERN LIGHT began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, GOLD MASTER was steadied when crowded for room by ACE OF PACE which shifted out. When ACE OF PACE was straightened to relieve this crowding, it then shifted in and caused crowding on its inside to RARE COLLECTION which as a result was checked. In the circumstances, no action was taken. ADD THE FUN was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was momentarily crowded for room between HORACE'S HORSE and DIAMITZ. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the view that an incident had occurred over the concluding stages which cast doubt on whether RARE COLLECTION should be declared the winner of the race. Also, there were three protests/objections lodged, two of which were lodged by C Williams, the rider of HANDBAG FORTUNE, 4th placegetter. The first against FASHION JEWELLERY (S Dye) being declared the 2nd placegetter alleging interference to his mount over about the final 400 Metres, the second against RARE COLLECTION (Y T Cheng) being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount over the concluding stages. S Dye, the rider of FASHION JEWELLERY, 2nd placegetter, also lodged a protest/objection against RARE COLLECTION being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount over the concluding stages. The Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion that after the 400 Metres HANDBAG FORTUNE, which had switched to the outside of FASHION JEWELLERY, raced tight with that horse for a considerable distance and then over about the final 70 Metres crowding was caused to HANDBAG FORTUNE and FASHION JEWELLERY by RARE COLLECTION which had shifted out. The Stewards did not consider, bearing in mind the circumstances of the different cases and the margins between the horses at the finish of the race, that HANDBAG FORTUNE would have finished in front of either FASHION JEWELLERY or RARE COLLECTION, therefore both these protests/objections were overruled. Further, the Stewards did not consider that FASHION JEWELLERY would have finished in front of RARE COLLECTION had the crowding which did take place over the concluding stages not occurred. Accordingly that protest/objection was also overruled and the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. Y T Cheng was told in similar circumstances he should stop riding and straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion. ROYAL EXCHANGE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of ROYAL EXCHANGE after the race did not show any significant findings. RARE COLLECTION and FASHION JEWELLERY were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted HORACE'S HORSE had blood present at its right nostril. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed the horse's trachea to be clean and it was therefore not an official bleeder.
