Racing Incident Report

Mr D E Ferraris, the trainer of PAY-DAY, was fined $2,000 for presenting that horse in the Parade Ring without a ring bit which is part of the horse's declared gear. When the gates opened, BARFOLD HERO turned its head to the right hand side and was then slow to begin, as a consequence got well back and raced at the rear. SHENANEGAN was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was steadied when crowded for room between STEPS AHEAD and THE ONLY ONE which on jumping shifted out. PAY-DAY and MY EGO began awkwardly. SOLDIER ON began awkwardly and bounded in the air. Approaching the first turn, STEPS AHEAD hung in badly. Near the 800 Metres, PAY-DAY was steadied away from the heels of MY EGO. Near the 500 Metres, BARFOLD HERO was crowded for room between SHENANEGAN and GOLD SANDFIELD which at this time was racing tight inside NOBLE ZOOM. Near the 400 Metres, NOBLE ZOOM was steadied and shifted to the outside of the heels of ELFHELM to obtain clear running. After the 200 Metres, PAY-DAY shifted in abruptly. Throughout the race, ELFHELM raced wide and without cover. Also throughout the race, REWARD hung in. The Stewards considered a protest/objection lodged by Y T Cheng, the rider of ON SHAN EXPRESS, 4th placegetter, against HAPPY TOGETHER (D Dunn) being declared the 3rd placegetter alleging interference to his mount near the 800 Metres. The Stewards were of the opinion that near the 800 Metres ON SHAN EXPRESS was steadied when crowded for room inside HAPPY TOGETHER which was carried in slightly by THE ONLY ONE which in turn was carried in by REWARD (M Rodd) which shifted ground while hanging. As the Stewards did not believe the inconvenience to ON SHAN EXPRESS was attributable to HAPPY TOGETHER, they overruled the protest/objection and accordingly the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. At a subsequent inquiry, M Rodd was reprimanded and told whilst the Stewards accepted he had made some effort to prevent his mount from shifting in, in similar circumstances he would be expected to do more than he did on this occasion. SOLDIER ON was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SOLDIER ON after the race did not show any significant findings. HAPPY TOGETHER, UNIVERSAL PIONEER and THE ONLY ONE were sent for sampling.
