Racing Incident Report

BE MY BRIDE began awkwardly, shifted in, bumped the hindquarters of WONDERFUL BOY and lost ground. CANNONISE began awkwardly. When the gates opened, HEKYLL N' JYDE, which was standing badly, leant against the outside of its stall, then bounded in the air and lost ground. FLYING EAGLE began awkwardly and shortly afterwards was crowded for room between SURE FORTUNE and SUPER which on jumping was carried out by LONGMARK. HAPPY ELITE was slow to begin. Near the 1100 Metres, SUPER, which was racing tight inside FLYING EAGLE, was steadied away from the heels of LONGMARK. Making the first turn, LONGMARK hung out. In the middle stages, BE MY BRIDE, which was having its first start in blinkers tonight, proved difficult to settle and raced ungenerously. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, GOLDEN PROMISE was momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of HEKYLL N' JYDE which shifted in after making contact with LONGMARK. Also making the turn at the 600 Metres, HAPPY ELITE hung out. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, BE MY BRIDE, which was continuing to race ungenerously, hung out. As a result of this, CANNONISE was carried wider on the track. Making the Home Turn, HAPPY ELITE was awkwardly placed inside the heels of SUPER. Just prior to straightening, GOLDEN PROMISE became unbalanced and bumped the running rail when crowded for room inside JOYWIN COMBINATION which momentarily got its head on the side and shifted in despite the efforts of B Prebble, its rider. When GOLDEN PROMISE became unbalanced, it then shifted out and caused crowding on its outside to WONDERFUL BOY and SUPER which as a result became badly unbalanced and lost its position. W Woods (ATHLETIC GOLD) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that shortly after straightening he permitted that horse to shift in when not clear of HEKYLL N' JYDE, causing that horse to be checked. W Woods was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 29 November 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension is deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting next Sunday 21 November 2004. In addition, W Woods was fined $15,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. W Woods said the intention had been to ride the horse behind the pace. He said it had been anticipated that GOLDEN PROMISE and HEKYLL N' JYDE would be the leaders and he should be in a position somewhere behind them. He said after beginning well he allowed his mount to stride forward, when the anticipated speed did not eventuate, he continued forward and crossed to the fence in the lead to avoid racing wide. When questioned, G Mossé (CANNONISE), which was having its first race start tonight, said throughout the race his mount travelled greenly, in the Straight got its head up and was inclined to hang in, because of this near the 200 Metres he pulled the whip through into his right hand. He said when he did this CANNONISE initially went to shift out, he again balanced the horse, slapped it down on the shoulder on three occasions in front of the saddle and rode it out hands and heels and over the concluding stages the horse was again inclined to hang in. FLYING EAGLE and GOLDEN PROMISE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, FLYING EAGLE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, FLYING EAGLE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After the race, GOLDEN PROMISE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, GOLDEN PROMISE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. HEKYLL N' JYDE and JOYWIN COMBINATION were sent for sampling.
