Racing Incident Report

WINNING COUNTER began awkwardly. FIVE GRAINS was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between HONOUR SUPREME and STARDANE which was carried in by GENERAL KINGY. HIGHLILLI was slow to begin. Near the 100 Metres, WINNING COUNTER was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of ALWAYS WELCOME. Throughout the race, from the outside gate, OUR JET raced wide and without cover. When questioned, D Dunn (FIVE GRAINS) said it had always been thought that the horse which appreciates a distance further than the 1000 Metres of today's race would be at the rear. He said however after being checked shortly after the start FIVE GRAINS lost ground and as a result was further back than was anticipated. He said after this he allowed FIVE GRAINS to be balanced, then after the 600 Metres he made some effort to have the horse commence making ground. He said after entering the Straight he shifted FIVE GRAINS to the centre of the track, commenced to ride along more vigorously, however, the horse was inclined to lay in. He said after the 200 Metres he pulled the whip on the horse and hit it on several occasions down the shoulder. He said FIVE GRAINS closed the race off strongly. Mr A T Millard, trainer of the horse, confirmed the riding instructions and said in view of FIVE GRAINS being interfered with at the start, he was satisfied with the riding of D Dunn. He said in his opinion if D Dunn had ridden FIVE GRAINS along vigorously to make up lost ground in the early stages, the horse would not have closed the race off in the manner in which it did today. D Dunn was told his riding had come under notice, he must ensure that he at all times rides his horses in a manner which is not open to query and even given his mounts' inability to win he must at all times ride his mounts competitively. OUR JET, GENERAL KINGY and PAOBRIDGE were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported HONOUR SUPREME had lost its left front plate.
