Racing Incident Report
AMBITIOUS LEADER began awkwardly. PO ON GEM began awkwardly, bumped the outside gate of its stall and lost ground. AMBITION was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, PO ON GEM was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of TOURELLE LAD which shifted in away from SUN AND ZAMEEN. At the 1100 Metres, THE COLLECTOR and SOUND OF SILENCE became unbalanced when crowded for room between TAIJI SPIRIT and TOURELLE LAD which shifted in further. At the 1000 Metres, PO ON GEM, which had been ridden along to make up ground, was steadied to avoid the heels of DR HAENSLER which when racing keenly shifted in. At the 900 Metres, TOURELLE LAD, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of DR HAENSLER which itself was proving difficult and hanging in when racing tight inside TROPHY. No action was taken. SOUND OF SILENCE and THE COLLECTOR, which were following, were hampered in consequence. Also at the 900 Metres, CAPABILITY, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of TAIJI SPIRIT. In the middle stages, PO ON GEM hung out. Near the 100 Metres, TAIJI SPIRIT, which was hanging in, shifted ground and brushed the hindquarters of SUN AND ZAMEEN. While the Stewards were satisfied the riding of C Brown (SUN AND ZAMEEN), 3rd placegetter, over the concluding stages did not affect the horse's finishing position, he was nevertheless told he must ride his mounts out at least hands and heels to the winning post where circumstances permit. When questioned, C Williams (SOUND OF SILENCE) said he had been instructed to have the horse begin well, then allow it to travel where it was comfortable without being forced. He said it was anticipated the horse would obtain a forward position in the run. He said SOUND OF SILENCE began only fairly, he immediately started edging across to obtain a favourable position and shortly afterwards received a call from W M Lai (THE COLLECTOR) which had drawn to his inside. He said he then straightened his mount to relieve the pressure he was applying to that horse which allowed runners from the outside to go forward of him. He said after being interfered with on two occasions in the early stages, SOUND OF SILENCE got further back than he had intended. He said at no stage of the race did SOUND OF SILENCE travel and despite making some ground in the Home Straight he believed the horse did not handle today's conditions well. He said on pulling up SOUND OF SILENCE felt "lethargic". JADE DANCER and TAIJI SPIRIT were sent for sampling.
