Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, HAPPY FORTUNE became fractious, kicked out behind and got its right hind leg caught between the back gates of its stall. The horse was removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of HAPPY FORTUNE. Before being allowed to race again, HAPPY FORTUNE will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. LOK WAH TREASURE was slow to begin. X-SPEED began awkwardly. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, CHAMPION BOY got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SPEED WINNER. In the early part of the Straight, OPTIC CHIEF raced tight inside LAZY BUDDIES. Approaching and passing the 400 Metres, LOK WAH TREASURE was held up and unable to improve between LUCKY BIRD and HONEYBEE which itself was being steadied and shifted out in an endeavour to find clear running. In the Straight, KASHMAC hung in and CHAMPION BOY got its head on the side and was inclined to lay in. M Rodd (GIDDY KIPPER) said after crossing from the outside barrier to race outside ACME OF SURPRISE, when he became aware the pace of the race in his opinion was fast he had attempted to steady his mount on several occasions, however, each time X-SPEED would then improve to his inside and as a consequence GIDDY KIPPER would not relax. He said he was concerned if he restrained GIDDY KIPPER to attempt to come back behind X-SPEED, his mount would race ungenerously and X-SPEED would shift away from the rail and consequently carry him three wide. M Rodd was told his explanation would be reported and while the Stewards appreciate truly run races he must be mindful he does not set his mounts too difficult a task. When questioned regarding his riding over the final 800 Metres, E Saint-Martin (X-SPEED) said he had obtained a position behind ACME OF SURPRISE and to the inside of GIDDY KIPPER in the run. He said the pace in the early stages in his opinion had been quick, however, commenced to steady somewhat after the 1200 Metres. He said at the 800 Metres he was trailing ACME OF SURPRISE, at this time was inside the heels of GIDDY KIPPER and he was happy to allow his mount to remain in that position where it was comfortable. He said after the 600 Metres he commenced to shift away from the rail, however, as he did this he received calling from the riders of runners on his outside and behind who were making ground. He said as he was not clear of these runners at this time he was not able to shift further and remained racing behind and between ACME OF SURPRISE and GIDDY KIPPER into the Home Straight. He said OPTIC CHIEF and LAZY BUDDIES continued to improve on his outside and he was therefore not able to shift to the outside of GIDDY KIPPER into clear running and consequently was held up for a significant distance after straightening when those runners gave ground. He said after the 200 Metres he shifted X-SPEED to the outside of GIDDY KIPPER as soon as he was able to do so without causing interference to other runners. He said X-SPEED then did not really run home and only passed tiring horses. He said in his opinion X-SPEED did not run out the distance of today's race on this occasion. E Saint-Martin was told his riding of X-SPEED particularly between 800 Metres and the 500 Metres had lacked judgement from a rider of his standing and he should in all circumstances where it is permissible ensure he provides his mounts with clear running. Apprentice M W Leung (ACME OF SURPRISE) said he had been instructed to follow the leader if possible and endeavour to get cover. He said from an awkward gate he rode along in the early stages to go forward and shifted across to race beside X-SPEED. He said after joining that horse, the rider of X-SPEED then steadied his mount which left ACME OF SURPRISE racing in the lead. He said he was aware of the tempo he was setting on ACME OF SURPRISE and he did not believe that he went excessively quick in the middle stages. He added during this section of the race he did endeavour to get ACME OF SURPRISE to relax but the horse did not respond and would not settle. He said after the 200 Metres when ACME OF SURPRISE was well beaten, he did have to steady his mount when crowded for room by GIDDY KIPPER which momentarily shifted in. Mr D Cruz, trainer of ACME OF SURPRISE, said he had hoped the horse would be ridden in 3rd or 4th position. He did say watching the race he was concerned with the tempo being set by ACME OF SURPRISE in the lead. He said after being left in the lead ACME OF SURPRISE went too quick, however, he did point out the horse has shown itself to be difficult to relax in both races and track work. He said having heard the explanation of Apprentice Leung, he was in the circumstances satisfied with the riding of ACME OF SURPRISE. The Stewards told Apprentice Leung that in their opinion he had erred by not making a greater effort to gradually steady the tempo particularly between the 1600 Metres and the 1200 Metres and in future he would be expected to show more initiative than he had on this occasion. LUCKY BIRD and SPEED WINNER were sent for sampling.
