Racing Incident Report

BEAR DOMINANCE was slow to begin. From the outside gate, GREEN IN BLUE was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear. Making the turn at the 2000 Metres, CORNWALL CHIEFS was crowded for room inside WINNING SUNSHINE. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, DASH AHEAD became unbalanced and bumped the running rail when crowded for room inside WINNING SUNSHINE which at this time got its head on the side and hung in away from BEAR DOMINANCE. Making the turn near the 500 Metres, DR WELL was bumped and carried wider by CHEERFUL HEART which shifted to the outside of CLASSA VICTORY into clear running. Near the 200 Metres, O Doleuze (KINGFIELD) dropped his whip. In the Straight, GREEN IN BLUE hung in badly and near the 100 Metres shifted in badly, causing S K Sit, its rider, to stop riding and straighten his mount. When questioned, D Whyte (DR WELL) said he had not been issued firm riding instructions for the horse, however, he pointed out when he last rode the horse on 12 January 2005 over the course and distance, he went forward and led and the horse failed to finish the race off and in his opinion was disappointing. He said at the horse's subsequent start when it was successful, it was ridden with cover. He said therefore tonight after beginning well he allowed DR WELL to travel forward for a short distance, however, CHEERFUL HEART and KINGFIELD which had drawn to his inside were being hard ridden to maintain their positions. He said at the same time CALIFORNIA BISHOP and CLASSA VICTORY were being hard ridden on his outside to go forward, he therefore considered to have ridden DR WELL along to clear runners to his inside would have caused the horse to travel too keenly, so he elected to steady in the hope of being able to come back and find a position with cover outside CHEERFUL HEART which he hoped would shift to the fence. He said when CHEERFUL HEART remained racing away from the rail, DR WELL was obliged to travel three wide and without cover throughout and consequently in the Straight gave ground. Mr J Size, trainer of DR WELL, confirmed he had not issued firm riding instructions to D Whyte as the horse was well known to him. He said after viewing the films and having in mind the manner in which the horse performed when it last led, he was satisfied with D Whyte's riding and felt he was a victim of circumstances. He said in his opinion to have expected D Whyte to go forward in the early stages and cross runners to his inside would not have been in the best interests of the horse. DR WELL was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DR WELL after the race did not show any significant findings. BEAR DOMINANCE and GREEN IN BLUE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported BEAR DOMINANCE had lost its left hind plate.
