Racing Incident Report
After being boxed, SHANGHAI LAD became fractious and reared. The horse was removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. SOPRANO began awkwardly. WYNDAM EASY was a little slow to begin, then throughout the race travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. Making the Home Turn, FAMOUS DANCER got its head on the side, shifted in and bumped the running rail. On straightening, FIVE GRAINS was steadied and shifted to the inside of FAMOUS DANCER to obtain clear running. Shortly after straightening, SOPRANO was steadied and shifted to the outside of CONNOISSEUR'S LOVE which was shifting in. Near the 200 Metres, SHANGHAI LAD was steadied when awkwardly placed between GOLCONDA and KINGSTON WINNER which momentarily shifted in. At the 100 Metres, SOPRANO, which was closing the race off strongly, was shifted to the inside of FAMOUS DANCER to continue going forward. When questioned regarding his riding in the early part of the Straight, E Saint-Martin (DAVE'S BEST) said after the 400 Metres he was racing in a two wide position and WYNDAM EASY at this time which was racing forward of him in a three wide position commenced to give ground. He said because of this he remained in a two wide position into the Home Straight. He said shortly after straightening he commenced to shift towards the outside of SHANGHAI LAD, however, initially DAVE'S BEST was reluctant to shift out and because of this did not pick up in the manner in which he had hoped. He said at this time CELESTIAL STEEL came from behind him and improved on his outside. He said near the 200 Metres he was momentarily crowded for room between SHANGHAI LAD and CELESTIAL STEEL, then he was not able to improve when unable to obtain clear running between KINGSTON WINNER which was giving ground and CELESTIAL STEEL which was not properly clear of him at this time. He said over the concluding stages when he was able to place DAVE'S BEST under pressure the horse finished the race strongly. The explanation of E Saint-Martin was reported and he was told where circumstances permit he should ensure he does his utmost to provide his mounts with clear running. FAMOUS DANCER was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of FAMOUS DANCER after the race did not show any significant findings. FIVE GRAINS and JOLLY GOOD FORTUNE were sent for sampling.
