Racing Incident Report

On jumping, DIAMOND ERA was crowded for room between CHINOOK and GLORIOUS RHYTHM, both of which began awkwardly and shifted ground. When the gates opened, FAVOURITE RETURN bounded in the air. In the early and middle stages, THAT'S IT proved very difficult to settle. Making the turn at the 1200 Metres, FREEBIRD hung out. Near the 100 Metres, GLORIOUS RHYTHM was bumped by DIAMOND ERA which at this time was shifting towards the outside of FAVOURITE RETURN to continue improving. C Munce (PORT OF HOPE) was reminded of his responsibilities to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels right to the winning post wherever possible. Apprentice H W Lai (SUPER MARKSMAN) explained he had been instructed to have the horse begin well and travel where it was comfortable, however, he was not to make too much use of the horse in the early stages. He said SUPER MARKSMAN began well and he was able to cross from a wide draw to race behind the leaders without having to make too much use of the horse. He said SUPER MARKSMAN tended to over-race, would not settle properly for him and near the 1000 Metres got its head up and shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of FREEBIRD. He said SUPER MARKSMAN continued to over-race for some distance, then at the 600 Metres commenced to give ground and finished tailed out. He said following the race SUPER MARKSMAN was blowing heavily. SUPER MARKSMAN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SUPER MARKSMAN after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of SUPER MARKSMAN was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, SUPER MARKSMAN will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CHINOOK was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CHINOOK after the race did not show any significant findings. DIAMOND ERA and FAVOURITE RETURN were sent for sampling.
