Racing Incident Report

LA MERVEILLE was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (left eye injury). Before being allowed to race again, LA MERVEILLE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the Start, the tongue tie fitted to TABBRIS was refitted. RAIN IN SPRING and TRAVEL LEADER were slow to begin. From the outside gate, STEP FORWARD was taken across behind runners. At the 1100 Metres, LUCKY CORDELIA got its head on the side, shifted in away from TABBRIS and caused some crowding to SUPERB. On straightening, LUCKY CORDELIA became unbalanced when crowded for room between TABBRIS which was commencing to give ground and TRAVEL LEADER which got its head on the side and hung in. TRAVEL LEADER continued to hang in for the remainder of the race. At the 350 Metres, LUCKY CORDELIA was steadied and shifted to the outside of TABBRIS which continued to give ground. When questioned, Y T Cheng (LUCKY CORDELIA) said he had ridden the horse in an official barrier trial at Happy Valley on 18 February 2006 and on that occasion he went forward and the horse trialed quite nicely. He said tonight he was instructed to make some use of LUCKY CORDELIA which usually begins well in an attempt to go forward in the early stages, cross to the fence and then allow runners to improve around his outside providing him with cover. He said in accordance with those instructions he rode along in the initial stages, however, he was unable to cross to the fence and near the 1200 Metres he allowed TABBRIS to improve around his outside and provide him with cover. He said LUCKY CORDELIA did not relax as he had hoped and travelled keenly and as a consequence did not finish the race off as anticipated. Mr L Ho, trainer of LUCKY CORDELIA, confirmed the riding instructions issued to Y T Cheng. He said recently LUCKY CORDELIA had been travelling in a midfield position or worse and had not shown a sufficient turn of foot to figure in the finish. He said because of this and the fact he anticipated the pace of tonight's race being good, he thought it was better for LUCKY CORDELIA to go forward in the early stages and obtain a position with cover. He said it was hoped by having the horse ridden more prominently it would not be too far out of its ground when making its run in the Home Straight. He added he believed LUCKY CORDELIA was better suited when ridden more prominently at Happy Valley than at Sha Tin. Mr Ho was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to notify the Stewards of an intended change in the racing pattern of runners trained by him. TABBRIS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, TABBRIS was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, TABBRIS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. AWARD and RAIN IN SPRING were sent for sampling.
