Racing Incident Report

EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT, Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 31.10.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore). Before being allowed to race again, EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the Start, the tongue tie fitted to BUDDIES POWER was refitted. From the outside barrier, TRIUMPH was taken across behind runners. Shortly after the start, SUDDEN SPLENDOR was checked when crowded for room between GLORIOUS RHYTHM which shifted out slightly and QI'S PET which was carried in by WAFER KING which in turn was carried in by ARROGANCE. For some distance passing the 1300 Metres, SUDDEN SPLENDOR raced tight inside WAFER KING. Shortly after straightening, SUDDEN SPLENDOR was shifted in after being unable to obtain clear running between GLORIOUS RHYTHM and TRIUMPH which shifted in slightly. In the Straight, CLASSA SUPREME hung out. For the major part of the race, SPEED OF LIGHT travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, W M Lai (G-ONE LEADING) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position. He said G-ONE LEADING did not begin well and then despite being ridden along failed to muster speed and in the early stages travelled further back than was intended. He said making the first turn G-ONE LEADING was racing in a three wide position, he therefore felt it was in the best interest of the horse to steady it further and shift to the fence as he believed G-ONE LEADING was not travelling well enough to go around the field and he believed he would be able to secure running along the fence in the Home Straight. He said he continued to race in last position until straightening, he then commenced to improve his position on the inside and initially G-ONE LEADING responded fairly, however, then over the final 200 Metres kept on only one-paced. When questioned regarding the poor performance of BUDDIES POWER, a last start winner, Apprentice K T Yeung said the manner in which the race was run tonight did not enable him to obtain a position with cover as was the case at the horse's most recent start. He said in the early stages he raced three wide and when it became apparent to him near the 1200 Metres that ARROGANCE which was racing to his inside was not going to go forward, he allowed BUDDIES POWER to gradually improve its position and cross to race outside the leader entering the Back Straight. He said when racing in this position, BUDDIES POWER did not relax for him as it did last start. He said he believed this was the reason for the horse's poor performance tonight. Mr A T Millard, trainer of BUDDIES POWER, said he believed the circumstances of tonight's race where the horse was not able to obtain cover or was not able to lead accounted for the horse's poor performance. GLORIOUS RHYTHM and BUDDIES POWER were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of GLORIOUS RHYTHM and BUDDIES POWER after the race did not show any significant findings. RAIN IN SPRING, TRIUMPH and SUDDEN SPLENDOR were sent for sampling.
