Racing Incident Report

SUGAR ON TOP began awkwardly and then lost further ground when crowded for room between TCHAIKOVSKY and WINNING REWARD which shifted in. Shortly after the start, STRONG GAIN and TRIUMPHANT UNICORN bumped when TRIUMPHANT UNICORN was carried in by CALIFORNIA PRINCE. Apprentice K L Chui (CALIFORNIA PRINCE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1300 Metres he failed to take sufficient measures to prevent his mount from shifting in when not clear of PRETTY TRIO, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards believed it was appropriate for Apprentice Chui's licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Thursday 23 November 2006 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting next Wednesday 15 November 2006. In addition, Apprentice Chui was fined $10,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. At the 700 Metres, SUGAR ON TOP was steadied away from the heels of WEALTHY TREASURE. At the 600 Metres, ENGINEERING WONDER, which was pulling, was awkwardly placed outside the heels of SUGAR ON TOP. In the early part of the Straight, ENGINEERING WONDER had difficulty obtaining clear running. After the 300 Metres, YELLOW DIAMOND was steadied when disappointed for running between CALIFORNIA PRINCE and JOLLY GOOD FORTUNE. After the 200 Metres, SUGAR ON TOP, which was closing the race off strongly, was momentarily steadied away from the heels of TCHAIKOVSKY. Throughout the race, CALIFORNIA PRINCE travelled wide and without cover. S Dye (TRIUMPHANT UNICORN) said the intention had been to ride the horse in a midfield position with cover if possible from its wide barrier in what was anticipated to be a quickly run race. He said he allowed TRIUMPHANT UNICORN to come back in the early stages, it soon became apparent to him that if he were to race midfield, he would be obliged to race wide and without cover and he therefore took TRIUMPHANT UNICORN further back to shift across and race outside DON FELIPE. He said despite his riding TRIUMPHANT UNICORN did not travel well, after the 700 Metres DON FELIPE shifted wider on the track, however, he was not going well enough to go forward and hold that horse in. He said because of this in the middle stages TRIUMPHANT UNICORN travelled wide and was then again carried wider by DON FELIPE making the Home Turn. He said in the Straight TRIUMPHANT UNICORN did not respond to his riding and was most disappointing. Mr C S Shum, trainer of TRIUMPHANT UNICORN, confirmed the riding instructions issued to S Dye and after viewing the video said he was satisfied with his riding of TRIUMPHANT UNICORN. He said in his opinion horses which travelled wide on today's track had difficulty figuring prominently in the finish. YELLOW DIAMOND was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. TRIUMPHANT UNICORN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of YELLOW DIAMOND and TRIUMPHANT UNICORN after the race did not show any significant findings. STRONG GAIN and FIFTY FIFTY were sent for sampling.
