Racing Incident Report

Whilst in the saddling stalls, it was noted FIVE GRAINS had shifted the left front plate. The horse was replated and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. SUNBELL was difficult to load. Before being allowed to race again, SUNBELL will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. GOOD NATURE began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped SUNBELL. A short distance later, GOOD NATURE was hampered when SUNBELL was taken in by FIFTY FIFTY which was in turn taken in slightly by GUNG HO. FIVE GRAINS, which was fractious in the barriers, was slow to begin. Then shortly after the start, FIVE GRAINS was hampered when crowded for room between SOUNDS BEST and RUM SHOT, both of which shifted ground. GREAT ACHIEVEMENT raced wide and without cover in the middle stages. Approaching the 600 Metre turn, GREAT ACHIEVEMENT was awkwardly placed outside the heels of GUNG HO. Shortly after straightening, SOUNDS BEST was steadied off the heels of GOODY and shifted to the inside of that horse. Approaching the 200 Metres, SOUNDS BEST was momentarily steadied when GOODY shifted in slightly. Also approaching the 200 Metres, GOOD NATURE, which was closing the race off strongly, was shifted out from behind SUNBELL to continue going forward. Approaching and passing the 200 Metres, FIVE GRAINS had difficulty obtaining clear running and then near the 50 Metres was awkwardly placed close to the heels of PRETTY TRIO. From passing the 100 Metres until just prior to the winning post, SOUNDS BEST was severely checked when held up and unable to improve between RUM SHOT and GOODY. GUNG HO hung in whilst weakening in the Straight. When questioned, D Whyte (GREAT ACHIEVEMENT) stated the only reason he could put down for the horse's poor performance was the fact that it was left racing wide and without cover in the middle stages. He said the horse travelled comfortably until weakening noticeably in the Straight. GREAT ACHIEVEMENT and GUNG HO were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of GREAT ACHIEVEMENT after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, GUNG HO was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, GUNG HO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GOODY and GOOD NATURE were sent for sampling.
