Racing Incident Report

SALUT BEAUTE was withdrawn on 19.12.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (respiratory disease) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter FLYING SPRINTER. Before being allowed to race again, SALUT BEAUTE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. DASHING WINNER began awkwardly and lost ground. ZAVONE began awkwardly. Near the 600 Metres, BLISS STAR and ZAVONE were hampered and carried wider by WINDICATOR which when proving difficult to settle was checked to avoid the heels of SPEED FIGHTER. No action was taken. Shortly after this, AMO was steadied to avoid the heels of WINDICATOR which shifted back in. In the middle stages, BLISS STAR travelled ungenerously and got its head up on a number of occasions. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in. They were of the view that an incident had occurred in the Straight which cast doubt on whether MR COOL should be declared the winner of the race. D Whyte, the rider of WINDICATOR, second placegetter, also lodged a protest/objection against MR COOL (Apprentice K W Tsui) being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount over the final 200 Metres. The Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion MR COOL shifted some ground near the 200 Metres, causing WINDICATOR to be crowded for room and carried wider, WINDICATOR then for the remainder of the race shifted out away from MR COOL as that horse continued to shift ground. Having in mind the margin between the two horses at the finish, the Stewards did not believe WINDICATOR would have finished in front of MR COOL had the crowding which occurred near the 200 Metres not taken place. Therefore the protest/objection was overruled and the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. When WINDICATOR was crowded for room near the 200 Metres, PLEZAYRE which was giving ground was steadied and AMO which was following was shifted out. At a subsequent inquiry, Apprentice Tsui was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount. Approaching and passing the 200 Metres, BRAVE KNIGHT had difficulty obtaining clear running inside WINE WIN. For the major part of the race, FLYING SPRINTER travelled wide and without cover and DASHING WINNER hung out. When questioned regarding the improved performance of MR COOL, Mr K L Man, trainer of the horse, said the horse had been performing poorly when racing over 1600 Metres at its recent starts. He said after its last start which was on the All Weather Track when MR COOL was beaten many lengths, the horse was required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial which it subsequently did when it finished 3rd. He said in the trial MR COOL was ridden by Apprentice Tsui who informed Mr Man that the horse might be better suited racing over a lesser distance. Mr Man said because of this he tonight entered MR COOL over 1200 Metres, reapplied blinkers to the horse's gear and in his opinion these matters accounted for the horse's improved performance. MR COOL and WINDICATOR were sent for sampling.
