Racing Incident Report
At declaration time, A Delpech was declared as the rider of both DRAGON STRIDE and SUDDEN SPLENDOR. It was established that A Delpech had a firm commitment to ride DRAGON STRIDE. As such, the Stewards permitted Apprentice K L Chui to be substituted as the rider of SUDDEN SPLENDOR. For this declaration error, A Delpech was fined $2,000. On jumping, RAIN IN SPRING and KING HOGAN bumped. After this, both horses were taken across behind runners from their wide barriers. Near the winning post on the first occasion, GLORIOUS RHYTHM, which after being shifted across to race on the rail and hard ridden to improve its position, was crowded for room inside UNIQUE SPEED. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, RIGHT CHOICE was steadied when crowded for room between SPACED and SUDDEN SPLENDOR which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in slightly. After this, SUDDEN SPLENDOR, which was racing wide and without cover, went forward to join the lead. After the 1000 Metres, DRAGON STRIDE was left racing wide and without cover. On straightening, GLORIOUS RHYTHM had difficulty obtaining clear running between ALWAYS ZIETEN and SUDDEN SPLENDOR. For some distance approaching the 200 Metres, UNIQUE SPEED had difficulty obtaining clear running between SUDDEN SPLENDOR and SPACED. When questioned regarding the poor performance of ALWAYS ZIETEN, Apprentice H W Lai said despite travelling in the lead at a moderate tempo, the horse did not relax with SUDDEN SPLENDOR racing to its outside and as a consequence despite keeping on in the early part of the Straight gave ground over the concluding stages. ALWAYS ZIETEN and RIGHT CHOICE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of ALWAYS ZIETEN and RIGHT CHOICE after the race did not show any significant findings. UNIQUE SPEED and KING HOGAN were sent for sampling.
