Racing Incident Report

ZAVONE was slow to begin. CLASSA FOR EVER was slow into stride. In the early and middle stages, MY SAY from a wide barrier travelled wide and without cover. After the 200 Metres, ZAVONE was inconvenienced by SALUT BEAUTE which was shifted in away from the heels of INVERNESS which was giving ground. After this, SALUT BEAUTE was then carried wider by ZAVONE which at this time shifted out. Also after the 200 Metres, CLASSA FOR EVER, which was commencing to give ground, was steadied when tightened for room inside ALWAYS WELCOME which itself was racing tight inside FLYING SPRINTER which shifted in slightly. Over the concluding stages, ALWAYS WELCOME was steadied when crowded for room inside FLYING SPRINTER which initially shifted in of its own accord and then was carried in further by EASY which had its head on the side and shifted in near the winning post. When questioned, W M Lai (NAMJONG FIGHTERS), which was having its first race start around a right hand bend, said he had been instructed to ensure the horse was properly balanced approaching the turn at the 600 Metres and endeavour to ensure through its inexperience racing in this direction it did not hang out. He said NAMJONG FIGHTERS began satisfactorily, he allowed it to shift across behind runners to a position with cover. He said approaching the turn at the 600 Metres NAMJONG FIGHTERS indicated it might hang out, therefore he did not ride along to maintain a position on the inside of SALUT BEAUTE. He said NAMJONG FIGHTERS made the turn at the 600 Metres a little awkwardly and he ensured the horse remained balanced into the Home Straight. He said he did not believe it would be in the best interest of NAMJONG FIGHTERS to shift it to the very outside prior to straightening, therefore in the early part of the Straight he rode his mount along hands and heels, believing he would obtain clear running outside SALUT BEAUTE, however, after the 200 Metres when he commenced to improve into that position, he noticed INVERNESS had commenced to give ground, therefore he immediately stopped riding and shifted his mount back to the inside of ZAVONE to continue going forward. He said NAMJONG FIGHTERS then closed the race off nicely. W M Lai was told his riding of NAMJONG FIGHTERS had come under notice and was of concern to the Stewards. He was told he should ensure he rides his mounts in a manner which is not open to query. CLASSA FOR EVER and INVERNESS were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, CLASSA FOR EVER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had sustained a laceration to the left front knee. Also after the race, INVERNESS was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said there were no significant findings other than the horse had lost the left front plate. EASY and FLYING SPRINTER were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 8 February 2007)
INVERNESS, which performed poorly, was examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison. He said at that time there were no significant findings other than the horse had lost the left front plate. INVERNESS was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer Y O Wong this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, INVERNESS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
