Racing Incident Report

GAUCHO was withdrawn on 30.11.07 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (respiratory disease) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter BITE MY DUST (Apprentice H W Lai). Before being allowed to race again, GAUCHO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When being saddled, TOP SPEED became fractious and lost its right front plate. TOP SPEED was replated and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. When the gates opened, DASHING WINNER bounded in the air and lost a considerable amount of ground. From a wide barrier, in the early stages CALIFORNIA HEART was taken across behind runners. In the middle stages and in the Home Straight, DASHING WINNER hung out, then close to the line improved into a narrow run between JADE DANCER and GOOD TRIO and because of this was not able to be fully tested. P H Lo (TOP SPEED) explained after making the turn at the 700 Metres his mount became unbalanced when racing between TREASURABLE and JADE DANCER. He said as a result of this he lost ground near the 600 Metres. When TOP SPEED lost ground, TELECOM SIR, which was following, was checked severely. G Mossé (HAPPY ELITE) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in front of midfield. He said HAPPY ELITE travelled comfortably in a position slightly worse than midfield and wide on the track which was not of a concern on today’s surface. He said prior to straightening he placed HAPPY ELITE under pressure, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and was most disappointing in the manner in which it closed the race off. HAPPY ELITE was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of HAPPY ELITE after the race did not show any significant findings. In the circumstances, the performance of HAPPY ELITE as a beaten favourite was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, HAPPY ELITE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Apprentice H W Lai explained he had been instructed if the horse from the outside barrier showed sufficient speed in the early stages, he should go forward, however, if he was not able to obtain a forward position, he should endeavour to find cover. He said after jumping he rode BITE MY DUST along in an attempt to go forward for a short distance, however, when the horse did not show sufficient speed, he then endeavoured to find a position with cover. He said as a consequence he allowed BITE MY DUST to drift back to a rearward position, then making the turn at the 700 Metres he commenced to ride his mount along. He said BITE MY DUST did not respond to his riding rounding the Home Turn, however, in the Straight did make some ground. BITE MY DUST and CALIFORNIA HEART were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of BITE MY DUST and CALIFORNIA HEART after the race did not show any significant findings. TREASURABLE and SUNNY GOLF were sent for sampling.
