Racing Incident Report

Prior to leaving the holding stable, it was noted SHY BALDY had lost its right front plate. This plate was reset. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. DARE TO WIN and SHANGDONG GENERAL began awkwardly and lost ground. WINE WIN and CONFUCIUS CLASSIC were slow into stride. Near the 700 Metres, WINE WIN, which had been hard ridden to make up ground, was steadied when crowded for room inside MACHO EXPRESSO which had been hanging in and at this time shifted in away from horses on its outside. No action was taken. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, SHANGDONG GENERAL, after being brushed by SPEED FIGHTER, got its head on the side, shifted out and was checked severely to avoid the heels of TIGER RIDGE. Near the 400 Metres, WINE WIN was checked when awkwardly placed inside the heels of MACHO EXPRESSO which itself was awkwardly placed inside the heels of THUNDER FLASH. On straightening, MACHO EXPRESSO was steadied and shifted to the outside of THUNDER FLASH to obtain clear running. At the 100 Metres, CONFUCIUS CLASSIC, which was closing the race off fairly, was steadied and shifted to the outside of THUNDER FLASH which was giving ground. Close to the line, MACHO EXPRESSO was awkwardly placed outside the heels of BELONG TO CASA which was shifting out. Because of this, MACHO EXPRESSO was not ridden right out to the end of the race. Throughout the race, SHY BALDY travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding his riding out of TIGER RIDGE over the concluding stages, Apprentice K T Yeung explained in the Straight his mount had hung in. He said because of this he was disadvantaged in the manner in which he rode TIGER RIDGE out over the concluding stages. Whilst the Stewards accepted TIGER RIDGE was hanging in, they nonetheless severely reprimanded Apprentice Yeung for the lack of vigour in his riding over the concluding stages. When questioned regarding his riding in the Home Straight, Apprentice C W Wong (DARE TO WIN) explained his mount which was racing first up from a 290 day spell, travelled in a rearward position. He said making the Home Turn he remained racing on the rail and commenced to improve his position inside SHANGDONG GENERAL at the rear of the field. He said in the Home Straight once balanced he rode DARE TO WIN along hands and heels and the horse responded only fairly. He said after the 200 Metres he hit DARE TO WIN down the shoulder with the whip on one occasion. He said DARE TO WIN continued to make some ground, then near the 100 Metres CONFUCIUS CLASSIC which was racing forward of him to his inside shifted out. He said because of this he momentarily steadied DARE TO WIN. He said after this DARE TO WIN continued to close the race off fairly. Mr C H Yip, trainer of DARE TO WIN, said whilst Apprentice Wong had ridden DARE TO WIN out in the Home Straight, he did believe Apprentice Wong could have in the circumstances ridden with more vigour. Apprentice Wong was severely reprimanded and told his riding of DARE TO WIN in the Home Straight had come under notice and he should ensure he rides all his mounts in a manner which is not open to query. B Prebble (THUNDER FLASH), which performed poorly, said his mount began well and travelled comfortably in the early stages. He said at the 600 Metres he had to make some use of THUNDER FLASH to maintain his position, then in the Home Straight the horse felt “weak” and failed to finish the race off. When questioned regarding the improved performance of FLYING SPRINTER, Trainer T W Leung explained the horse was dropping back in distance to 1000 Metres tonight and it was therefore decided not to ride the horse hard in an endeavour to obtain a forward position as he felt FLYING SPRINTER would not be able to finish the race off if ridden in this manner. He said in his opinion FLYING SPRINTER was suited by the quick tempo of tonight's race over a shorter distance which enabled the horse to close the race off strongly. THUNDER FLASH was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. WINE WIN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of THUNDER FLASH and WINE WIN after the race did not show any significant findings. FLYING SPRINTER and BELONG TO CASA were sent for sampling.
