Racing Incident Report

At the time of declarations, D Beadman was declared as the rider of SOCRATES. As D Beadman had accepted 4 rides at this racemeeting outside of his retaining stable when he was only permitted to accept 3 such rides, Z Purton was substituted as the rider of SOCRATES. D Beadman was fined $2,000 for accepting in excess of the permitted number of outside rides at a race meeting. EVER BRIGHT was withdrawn on 15.3.08 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (respiratory disease). Before being allowed to race again, EVER BRIGHT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. AGILITY bounded in the air at the start and lost ground. Near the 1000 Metres, MAN IN THE MIRROR was shifted to a position without cover and allowed to stride forward. Passing the 1000 Metres, HAIL THE STORM was steadied from a position inside GO JOHNNY GO and then commenced to shift wider on the track. Approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, EYE WITNESS was hampered and carried wider by HAIL THE STORM. Shortly after straightening, GO JOHNNY GO and CRUSADER OF GOLD became unbalanced after bumping when endeavouring to improve between INFINITE DELIGHT and MEDICO. After the 400 Metres, CRUSADER OF GOLD was checked when disappointed for running between GO JOHNNY GO and INFINITE DELIGHT. CRUSADER OF GOLD was then held up and unable to obtain clear running for a short distance. Over the concluding stages, EYE WITNESS hung in. Z Purton (SOCRATES) explained he had been advised the horse is not an easy horse to ride and he should endeavour to go forward and race prominently. He said he rode SOCRATES along in the early stages in accordance with his instructions and travelled into a forward position. He said making the first turn he felt GO JOHNNY GO may steady and take a position behind HAIL THE STORM which would enable SOCRATES to shift to a one off position with cover. He said GO JOHNNY GO was then ridden along to maintain its position and as a consequence SOCRATES travelled three wide and without cover for the major part of the race. He said despite there being an opportunity after the 1600 Metres to steady SOCRATES to obtain a position with cover, because of the instructions he had been issued, he did not do so as he felt GO JOHNNY GO may steady and shift to the rail. Y T Cheng (INFINITE DELIGHT) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in the box seat. He said he rode INFINITE DELIGHT along in the early stages to cross HAIL THE STORM and then immediately attempted to steady his mount to allow runners on the outside to cross and provide him with cover. He said INFINITE DELIGHT proved difficult to settle, near the 1700 Metres he took another hold in a further attempt to have the horse come back underneath him, however, it failed to do so. He said as a consequence INFINITE DELIGHT travelled keenly in the lead and was further forward than instructed. He said because of the manner in which INFINITE DELIGHT raced, in the Straight it gave ground. Mr D E Ferraris, trainer of INFINITE DELIGHT, confirmed the riding instructions issued to Y T Cheng and said he was concerned with the tempo with which INFINITE DELIGHT ran the race from the front. After viewing the video of the race, Mr Ferraris accepted INFINITE DELIGHT proved difficult for Y T Cheng to settle which resulted in the horse travelling in the lead. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported INFINITE DELIGHT was making an abnormal breathing noise on pulling up. The performance of INFINITE DELIGHT, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, INFINITE DELIGHT will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CRUSADER OF GOLD was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CRUSADER OF GOLD after the race did not show any significant findings. GO JOHNNY GO, AGILITY and EYE WITNESS were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 17 March 2008)
CRUSADER OF GOLD, which performed poorly, was examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison after the race. He said at that time there were no significant findings. CRUSADER OF GOLD was again examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison at the stables of Trainer D E Ferraris this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, CRUSADER OF GOLD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
