Racing Incident Report

GROWL, which was standing with its head turned to the left, was slow to begin. On jumping, GOODY got its head up, then in the early stages travelled wide and without cover. FAT DRAGON began awkwardly, then lost further ground when being steadied away from the heels of MELLIFLUOUS. After this, despite being ridden along, FAT DRAGON failed to muster speed. At the 1300 Metres, GROWL and MELLIFLUOUS were momentarily crowded for room inside GOODY. After the 1200 Metres, GROWL was steadied when again crowded for room inside MELLIFLUOUS which at this time was steadied and shifted in to avoid the heels of VICTORY TREASURE (Apprentice K L Chui) which shifted in. Apprentice Chui was advised to exercise greater care. In the early part of the Straight, MELLIFLUOUS hung in. When questioned regarding the poor performance of LUCKY HERO, D Beadman said his mount travelled comfortably behind the leaders throughout the race, however, it did not quicken when placed under pressure in the Straight. He said in his opinion LUCKY HERO did not run out the 1650 Metres at its first time of asking. LUCKY HERO was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, LUCKY HERO was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said the horse was an early “roarer”. When questioned, B Prebble (YANKEE) said he had discussed the manner in which the horse would be ridden with Mr C Fownes, trainer of the horse, prior to arriving at the races tonight. He said it was decided in consultation that from a wide barrier YANKEE would be best suited if not ridden to go forward in the early stages but rather endeavour to obtain a midfield or slightly worse position on the rail if possible. He said it was considered the tempo of tonight’s race would be considerably stronger than that of the race in which YANKEE led throughout to win. He said in his opinion YANKEE would not have enough early speed to cross runners in a forward position to avoid being caught wide and would be at a disadvantage if left racing without cover. He said in accordance with the intentions he took YANKEE back on jumping, however, FAT DRAGON which is usually an on-pace runner and had drawn to his inside was slow to begin and because of this as he shifted across and that horse was ridden along to go forward, he was not able to obtain his desired position on the rail and as a consequence travelled further back than anticipated. He said YANKEE travelled comfortably throughout the race towards the rear and approaching the 400 Metres when GOODY did not respond and improve its position to carry him forward, he shifted out to commence improving around that horse. He said in the early part of the Straight YANKEE quickened, then passing the 200 Metres commenced to hang in and finished the race off only fairly. CONESTOGA and YANKEE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CONESTOGA and YANKEE after the race did not show any significant findings. UNITED EFFORTS and EXPRESS WIN were sent for sampling.
