Racing Incident Report

MEDALLION was slow to begin. On jumping, SILVER WRAITH and CHINESE COURSER bumped. Shortly after the start, CHINESE COURSER was steadied after again bumping with SILVER WRAITH after being carried in by SOU MA TAM. Also shortly after the start, TREASURE HUNT was crowded for room between SILVER WRAITH and GANBARIA. At the 1000 Metres, NEW TRIUMPH was inconvenienced and carried wider by GLENEALY ELITE which itself was inconvenienced and carried wider by NATIONAL GLORY which was carried out by VICTORY SPEEDY. After the 900 Metres, GANBARIA was steadied when awkwardly placed between TREASURE COLT and SILVER WRAITH (Apprentice M L Yeung) which shifted in when not clear. Apprentice Yeung was advised to exercise care. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, GUAN DAO lost ground when being steadied away from the heels of NATIONAL GLORY which after initially shifting in and bumping VICTORY SPEEDY then shifted out. GALLANT HUSSAR, which was following, was steadied in consequence and this also caused inconvenience to MEDALLION which was checked. After the 800 Metres, GANBARIA was left racing wide and without cover. Making the Home Turn, NEW TRIUMPH was tightened for room between GUAN DAO and NATIONAL GLORY. For a considerable distance approaching and passing the 300 Metres, GLENEALY ELITE was held up and unable to obtain clear running and near the 250 Metres was steadied and shifted in away from the heels of GANBARIA. At the 250 Metres, ACTIVE VALOUR was steadied when disappointed for running between GANBARIA and NATIONAL GLORY (O Doleuze) which shifted in slightly. O Doleuze was advised to exercise greater care. M W Leung (ACTIVE VALOUR) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of MEDALLION, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. M W Leung was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 27 October 2008 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday 15 October 2008. S K Sit (GANBARIA) dropped his whip after the 200 Metres. In the Straight, SILVER WRAITH hung in. The declaration of weighed-in was deferred as the Stewards considered an incident occurred over the concluding stages which might cast doubt on whether NEW TRIUMPH ought be declared the 2nd placegetter. After reviewing the films, it was decided the matter should not be progressed to a formal protest/objection hearing. It was established that over about the final 70 Metres GALLANT HUSSAR, 3rd placegetter, and NEW TRIUMPH drifted wider on the track, however, the Stewards were satisfied that this did not affect the result of the race as in their opinion GALLANT HUSSAR was not carried wider by NEW TRIUMPH. When questioned regarding the poor performance of VICTORY SPEEDY, D Whyte said in his opinion his mount swallowed its tongue and consequently was not able to breathe properly during the race. He said just prior to straightening VICTORY SPEEDY became momentarily unbalanced in its action, he then rode along and the horse kept on only fairly. He said near the 200 Metres he became concerned with the action of VICTORY SPEEDY which in his opinion was deteriorating and because of this he did not ride his mount out to the end of the race. VICTORY SPEEDY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of VICTORY SPEEDY after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of VICTORY SPEEDY was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, VICTORY SPEEDY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TREASURE COLT was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, TREASURE COLT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had bled from both nostrils. GLENEALY ELITE and NEW TRIUMPH were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported NATIONAL GLORY had returned with blood in its mouth.
Additional Veterinary Report (13/10/2008)
VICTORY SPEEDY, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. VICTORY SPEEDY was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer P O’Sullivan this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its left front leg. As previously advised, VICTORY SPEEDY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
