Racing Incident Report

EVER KING was slow to begin. Near the 1400 Metres, EVER KING was checked away from the heels of CLASSIC ENERGY. Throughout the race, VISIONARIO travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, W M Lai stated that as it was anticipated that there were a number of backmarkers in today’s race, it was felt that if DASHING THUNDER from its draw towards the outside got too far back, it would be left with too much to do. He said accordingly he was instructed to be positive on the horse, which was wearing blinkers again, to obtain a forward position and then to take hold of his mount and obtain cover in 4th or 5th position if possible. When questioned, Apprentice K C Leung stated that he had been instructed to have SPARKLING racing in a midfield position if possible. He said SPARKLING made contact with the inside of its barrier stall on jumping and was slow to begin. He said he then rode SPARKLING along to obtain a position behind BEST MATE in the early stages, however, this was further back than had been intended. He said he continued to follow that horse throughout the race, however, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of BEST MATE passing the 600 Metres when that horse commenced to give ground. He added he was unable to shift out at this time as IMPLIED VOLATILITY had improved to be racing to his outside. He said shortly before entering the Straight BEST MATE shifted out which allowed SPARKLING the opportunity to obtain a run towards the inside, he immediately commenced riding his mount along at the entrance to the Straight, however, SPARKLING raced greenly in the Straight. He said he pulled the whip in the right hand, SPARKLING then shifted out on a number of occasions, therefore he changed the whip into his left hand. He stated when he did this, SPARKLING then shifted back in and over the concluding stages raced close to the heels of KOWLOON PRIDE, therefore he was not able to ride SPARKLING out right to the end of the race as he normally would. When questioned, Apprentice T H So (BATURO) stated that he was instructed to lead on the horse if possible, however, if the riders of other runners showed an intent to lead, he should race behind the leaders. He said BATURO began awkwardly and stumbled and after this did not show the natural speed that it had displayed at its previous start. He said he observed DASHING THUNDER and LUCKYME being vigorously ridden from outside draws to shift across and for this reason, rather than make use of BATURO to hold those horses out, he allowed both DASHING THUNDER and LUCKYME to cross and obtained a position behind those horses. He said BATURO travelled satisfactorily during the race, he shifted the horse out shortly after entering the Straight, however, BATURO was disappointing in its failure to finish off the race. Trainer Y S Tsui confirmed the instructions given to Apprentice So. He said whilst it was anticipated that several runners may have sufficient speed to contest the lead, he believed that BATURO would be able to obtain a forward position and if unable to lead would be able to position on the back of the speed. He said after viewing the videos, he felt that Apprentice So should have made more effort than he did on this occasion to obtain the lead albeit that DASHING THUNDER and LUCKYME were being ridden aggressively to obtain forward positions. Apprentice So was advised, in the opinion of the Stewards, he should have been more positive on BATURO in the early stages to obtain the lead in order to comply with his instructions. He was further advised that some of his rides this season had come under notice and he should at all times ride his mounts as instructed where circumstances permit and that he should ride in such a fashion so as to leave no room for query. A veterinary inspection of BATURO after the race did not show any significant findings. KOWLOON PRIDE, LUCKYME and WIN MORE were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that EVER KING had lost its left front plate.
