Racing Incident Report
DIAMOND LEGEND began only fairly.
Soon after the start, BLOOMING SPIRIT shifted out and bumped STARLOT, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. Then a short distance later, BLOOMING SPIRIT lost ground when steadied away from the heels of FOX CHEUNGER which was taken out by I’M THE CONQUIST.
Approaching the 800 Metres, SHOW MISSION was left racing wide and without cover.
Approaching the 200 Metres, BLOOMING SPIRIT was steadied when unable to proceed into a narrow run between ROYAL CHOCOLATE and SHOW MISSION before being shifted to the outside of SHOW MISSION after the 200 Metres to continue improving.
STARLOT had difficulty obtaining clear running approaching the 200 Metres and again over the concluding stages.
At the 150 Metres, I’M THE CONQUIST was steadied when tightened for room between STARLOT which shifted out slightly and ROYAL CHOCOLATE which was directed in by SHOW MISSION (G van Niekerk) which shifted in under pressure. G van Niekerk was advised to make more effort to keep his mounts straight.
G van Niekerk was fined $5,000 for improper use of the whip in that he raised weal marks over the horse’s right flank.
When questioned regarding the performance of I’M THE CONQUIST, A Badel stated that the horse was out-paced in the early stages and appeared shy of other runners when racing between horses. He said after receiving crowding in the Home Straight, I’M THE CONQUIST did not stretch out comfortably and failed to close off the race. A veterinary inspection of I’M THE CONQUIST immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, S de Sousa could not offer any explanation for the disappointing run of ROYAL CHOCOLATE. He stated the horse travelled satisfactorily throughout the race, however, when placed under pressure prior to the 400 Metres, it gave him no response. A veterinary inspection of ROYAL CHOCOLATE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on STARLOT at the request of Trainer P O’Sullivan. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, STARLOT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of BANDY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
BLOOMING SPIRIT, LIGHTNING MISSILE and SHOW MISSION were sent for sampling.
