When questioned rider stated that the instructions were to settle the horse back in the field from the wide barrier and to ensure that he improved to the outside in the Home Straight since the horse had been held up at the first race start when positioned to the inside. He said after following a runner throughout the event he elected to shift to that runner’s outside to comply with those instructions, nevertheless, was held up for clear running behind that horse near the 400M. He added having regard to his instructions he persisted for a run to the outside of that runner and after being held up between the 400M and the 300M he endeavoured to improve between runners, however, his mount lay out and was unable to proceed into that run. He said as a result had difficulty obtaining clear running until near the 100M when shifting in. When questioned as to whether there was an opportunity to shift to the inside of that runner near the 400M, rider stated that as his instructions were to come to the outside he had not observed that run to be available and therefore did not contemplate taking that position. After considering his explanation the Stewards advised rider that whilst he believed his instructions were to come to the outside he should, wherever possible, ensure that he obtains the first run that becomes available, particularly in circumstances when he is experiencing difficulty in obtaining clear running - Race 441.
