Racing Incident Report

On entering the track, HAPPY ERA kicked out and made contact with a rail. On arrival at the Start, HAPPY ERA was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race.
IMPERIAL ROME was slow to begin and shortly after the start was taken across behind runners.
CALIFORNIA BOUNTY began very awkwardly and was bumped shortly after the start by LONDON CHINA TOWN which shifted out.
Despite being ridden along in the early stages, BEST ELEVEN failed to muster speed.
In the early stages, BULLISH FRIEND got its head on the side and lay in.
Near the 450 Metres, WINDICATOR STAR was checked and lost ground when attempting a tight run inside EL ZONDA which got its head on the side and lay in behind the hindquarters of BEST ELEVEN.
In the early part of the Straight, BEST ELEVEN was held up for clear running and near the 350 Metres was awkwardly placed outside the heels of CALIFORNIA BOUNTY which, when giving ground, was taken out slightly by GOLDEN HARVEST. A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA BOUNTY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of CALIFORNIA BOUNTY, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CALIFORNIA BOUNTY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Approaching the 200 Metres, EL ZONDA was shifted out away from the heels of BULLISH FRIEND when disappointed for running between that horse and HAPPY ERA.
Near the 200 Metres, LONDON CHINA TOWN and FIONN’S TREASURE became unbalanced after bumping due to both horses shifting ground. STRAIGHT GOLD, which was following and was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was hampered in consequence.
When questioned, M Chadwick (BULLISH FRIEND) stated that in the early stages he attempted to cross runners to his inside and it was not until after the 1000 Metres that he was able to cross FULFIL A WISH which had been ridden positively in the early stages. He said near the 900 Metres he anticipated that he would be able to cross GOLDEN HARVEST, however, that horse maintained its position inside the heels of BULLISH FRIEND and as LONDON CHINA TOWN and CALIFORNIA BOUNTY were crossing BULLISH FRIEND at that time, he was not able to shift in to a position in front of GOLDEN HARVEST and was consequently left racing wide and without cover from near the 800 Metres.
When questioned regarding the improved performance of HAPPY ERA, Trainer J Size stated that the horse had disappointed him in its only other start this season when it was first up since July. He said HAPPY ERA had performed well in barrier trials and in track work leading up to that race and a forward showing was anticipated. He said although HAPPY ERA struck some interference in the early stages of that race, he was very disappointed with its performance. He said HAPPY ERA subsequently pulled up well and then did well in the days after the race and as such he was not able to account for its disappointing performance that day. He added HAPPY ERA had again performed well in track work leading up to tonight’s race and based on this he gave the owner a positive report which was identical to that which he gave to the owner prior to its first up run.
HAPPY ERA and GOLDEN HARVEST were sent for sampling.
