Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, SCREAMING EAGLE stood flat-footed and lost a significant amount of ground, then hung in throughout. Before being allowed to race again, SCREAMING EAGLE will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. SWEET SMILE began awkwardly, got its head up and lost ground. Near the 500 Metres, ORIENTAL was steadied and lost ground when disappointed for running on the inside of KINGSTON GLORY and behind TURBOJET. Near the 300 Metres, ORIENTAL was momentarily crowded for room between TURBOJET and STAR OF NORTHERN which shifted out. After this, ORIENTAL hung in and proved difficult to ride in the run to the line. C Williams (ELITE WIN) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a rearward position and if possible make his run on the outside. He said in accordance with those instructions he allowed ELITE WIN to settle near the rear and after the 500 Metres he found himself inside the heels of SWEET SMILE which meant he was not able to shift to the outside into clear running. He said in the early part of the Straight he endeavoured to improve between SILVERBIRD and KINGSTON GLORY, but then shortly afterwards shifted to the inside of KINGSTON GLORY into clear running. He said ELITE WIN responded nicely in the Straight, however, did not appear to fully appreciate racing inside runners. Mr D A Hayes, the trainer of ELITE WIN, confirmed the instructions given. He said in his opinion last time the horse failed to finish off when it was being ridden further forward. He said tonight the intention with blinkers being re-applied was to ride it quietly, bring it to the outside and hopefully finish over the top of other runners. Initially Mr Hayes expressed some disappointment with the fact that C Williams had not shifted ELITE WIN to the outside before straightening, however, after viewing the film he accepted after the 500 Metres ELITE WIN was inside the heels of SWEET SMILE which prevented him from shifting out at that time. C Williams was told whilst there were some circumstances preventing him from making his run on the outside as instructed, he should at all times endeavour to ride to the instructions he had been issued. A Marcus (LUCKY CHAMPION) said he had ridden the horse before and in his opinion the horse does not quicken appreciably in the Straight rather previously it had run past horses which had not finished the race off. He said therefore he asked Mr S T Wong, the trainer of the horse, if he could ride it in a more forward position tonight at its first attempt at the increased distance of 1600 Metres as he anticipated a moderate tempo. He said the race was run more quickly than he had hoped, but he added LUCKY CHAMPION travelled comfortably in a more forward position without being made use of. The explanation submitted by A Marcus was accepted. S Dye (KINGSTON GLORY) said approaching the 800 Metres he was racing in a loose two wide position behind and to the outside of STAR OF NORTHERN which appeared to him to be inclined to lay out. He said making the turn STAR OF NORTHERN shifted away from the rail and he shifted out a little away from that runner. He said when he did this, ORIENTAL improved quickly on his inside in a two wide position, made contact with him and carried him to a three wide position. He said he was surprised ORIENTAL had improved into this position, he then rode along to consolidate his three wide position to ensure ORIENTAL would not shift him wider when attempting to improve around TURBOJET. The explanation of S Dye was accepted. ORIENTAL was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of ORIENTAL after the race did not show any significant findings. LUCKY CHAMPION and KNIGHT TEMPLAR were sent for sampling.
