Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, WADADELIGHT became fractious, reared and momentarily had its fore legs over a partition. The horse was removed from its stall, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. Before being allowed to race again, WADADELIGHT will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. EUPHORIC KID was a little slow to begin, then shortly afterwards was steadied when crowded for room between WIN FORTUNE and FANTASTIC HORSE which shifted out. From the outside gate, SPOKESMAN was momentarily steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear. At the 1200 Metres, MAGIC TOUCH was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between EUPHORIC KID and MAGIC TEMPLE which at this time got its head on the side and lay in. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, FANTASTIC HORSE shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of WIN FORTUNE. O Doleuze (WADADELIGHT) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that shortly after straightening he shifted his mount out when not clear of ALBELA and MAGIC TEMPLE, causing those horses to be crowded for room, lose their rightful running and be checked. Some inconvenience was also caused to WINNING SMILE and JUST IN TIME. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was for O Doleuze to be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 13 May 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Saturday 1 May 2004. Consideration was given to a protest/objection lodged by R Fradd, the rider of WINNING SMILE, second placegetter, against WADADELIGHT (O Doleuze) being declared the winner alleging interference shortly after the start and near the 800 Metres. It was established that on jumping WINNING SMILE was crowded for room between TUSITALA and WADADELIGHT, both of which shifted ground. Because of this, WADADELIGHT became unbalanced, then shifted in and caused further crowding to WINNING SMILE which as a result was steadied. It was further established that near the 800 Metres WINNING SMILE was inconvenienced and carried wider when WADADELIGHT shifted to a three wide position outside MAGIC TOUCH. As TUSITALA had contributed to the incident shortly after the start, the Stewards believed WADADELIGHT could not be held fully responsible and further they could not be satisfied that had the interference which occurred near the 800 Metres not taken place, WINNING SMILE would have finished in front of WADADELIGHT. Therefore the protest/objection was overruled. F Coetzee (CHINA CAT) said the horse was fractious in the gates and continually leant against the back gates of its stall. He said CHINA CAT consequently did not begin well, he rode it along in the early stages, however, it failed to muster speed and at no stage of the race did the horse travel on the bridle. He said in the past CHINA CAT had shown itself to be somewhat temperamental. He was unable to offer any explanation for the performance of the horse. CHINA CAT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of CHINA CAT after the race did not show any significant findings. WADADELIGHT and WINNING SMILE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 29 April 2004)
CHINA CAT, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. CHINA CAT was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A S Cruz this morning. He said at this time the horse was displaying significant unevenness in the left front and right hind legs. Before being allowed to race again, CHINA CAT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
