Racing Incident Report
KEEN FLYER was withdrawn on 4.6.08 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore and left hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter LADY FIRST (Apprentice K T Yeung). Before being allowed to race again, KEEN FLYER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Apprentice K T Yeung's explanation for being 2 lb overweight at weighed-out was noted. The Stewards advised Apprentice Yeung that even when he is engaged for rides on standby runners which have been promoted into the field, he still has a requirement to advise of any probable overweight at the time of accepting the ride. CHOICE AND CHANCE and SMART CURRENCY were slow to begin. TOUT VA BIEN began awkwardly and lost ground. After the 700 Metres, LADY FIRST was steadied when momentarily crowded for room inside the heels of EXPLODING. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, MAGIC KING got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of LADY FIRST. Throughout the race, SMART CURRENCY travelled wide and without cover and making the turn after the 600 Metres hung out badly, then in the Straight gave ground. In the circumstances, the Stewards believed the performance of SMART CURRENCY to be unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, SMART CURRENCY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Shortly after straightening, JUST RIGHT was brushed by KEEN SOUL which shifted in. For a considerable distance after the 200 Metres, LADY FIRST had difficulty obtaining clear running. Almost right on the winning post, JUST RIGHT was crowded for room between PERFECT TREASURE and KEEN SOUL which shifted in. CHOICE AND CHANCE, which was following, was steadied away from the heels of JUST RIGHT. Because of this, JUST RIGHT and CHOICE AND CHANCE were not ridden out to the end of the race as they normally would be. When questioned regarding the poor performance of OPTIC KING, M Du Plessis explained when he led on the horse at its most recent start over 1200 Metres, he was required to make some use of the horse in the early stages. He said after the race the connections expressed to him that in their opinion he might have made too much use of OPTIC KING. He said tonight dropping back in distance to 1000 Metres from a wide barrier, after beginning well he did not ride along vigorously to go forward and when a number of runners to his inside showed superior natural speed, he elected to allow OPTIC KING to drift back in the hope of obtaining a position with cover. He said OPTIC KING did not show its normal speed and in his opinion raced “flat”. OPTIC KING was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, OPTIC KING was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had sustained an abrasion to its left hind pastern. KEEN SOUL and PERFECT TREASURE were sent for sampling.
