Racing Incident Report

FORTUNE DANCER was slow to begin. SMART CHIEF was a little slow to begin and then shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room by SURE FIT which on jumping shifted in abruptly. NASA PEARL began awkwardly and shortly after the start blundered. H K Yim (FAT CHANCE) was severely reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in near the 1700 Metres when not sufficiently clear of SMART CHIEF, causing that horse to be steadied. Near the 1200 Metres, DON SEBASTIAN bumped the running rail. H K Yim pleaded guilty to a charge of improper riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 700 Metres he directed his mount out to the outside of PRIZE WINNER to obtain clear running, in doing so made significant contact with SMART CHIEF on two occasions which was racing to his outside. This in turn caused SMART CHIEF to shift out and cause some interference to KONRAD THE GREAT. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards decided the appropriate penalty was for H K Yim to be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 2 February 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (9 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension is to take immediate effect and is to be served concurrently with the suspension incurred by Jockey Yim for careless riding in Race 5. Near the 600 Metres, SMART CHIEF was steadied when crowded for room between KONRAD THE GREAT and FORTUNE DANCER. At the 600 Metres, TEMMOKU was checked and shifted in to avoid the heels of NASA PEARL which was giving ground. After the 600 Metres, CUPID was steadied to avoid the heels of PRIZE WINNER which was giving ground. NASA PEARL was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, NASA PEARL was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, NASA PEARL will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. PRIZE WINNER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of PRIZE WINNER after the race did not reveal any significant findings. The performance of PRIZE WINNER, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, PRIZE WINNER must perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. C Williams, the rider of PACIFIC ALLIANCE, which finished tailed out, expressed concern over the horse's action. PACIFIC ALLIANCE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, the horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, PACIFIC ALLIANCE will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SURE FIT and THE PIONEER were sent for sampling.
