Racing Incident Report

NEVER HEADED and DECOUVERT were slow to begin. O Doleuze (ACME OF SURPRISE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at about the 1400 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear, causing crowding on its inside to LUCKY VICTORIES, NEVER HEADED and SMART HORSE with the main sufferer being NEVER HEADED which lost its rightful running and checked. O Doleuze's licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Thursday 16 January 2003 and expire on Tuesday 4 February 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong race days). It should be noted this suspension commences at the expiration of the suspension incurred by Jockey Doleuze at the Sha Tin meeting on 1 January 2003. At the 1200 Metres, LUCKY VICTORIES and SMART HORSE were crowded for room by ACME OF SURPRISE which shifted in when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SMART WIN (A Suborics) which shifted in when barely clear. In the circumstances, A Suborics was severely reprimanded. Near the 200 Metres, SMART WIN, which was giving ground, was steadied to avoid the heels of MAGNIFICENT which shifted to the outside of MY JOY to obtain running. When under pressure in the Straight, TANAHMERAH hung out and proved difficult to ride. O Doleuze (ACME OF SURPRISE) said he had been riding ACME OF SURPRISE in all its fast work leading up to today's race and this work in his opinion was good. He said the horse was accompanied to the Start by a lead horse today as it was when it won at its last start on 24 November 2002. He said on that occasion ACME OF SURPRISE was calm behind the barriers, however, today the horse was on the toe which surprised him. He added after the horse began well, he was unable to obtain cover and was obliged to race three wide throughout. He said he became aware ACME OF SURPRISE would not figure in the finish of the race when it failed to respond to his riding after the 600 Metres. Mr D Cruz, trainer of ACME OF SURPRISE, said he was unable to explain the poor performance of the horse. He said the horse had been working well and had been on its feed in the lead up to today's race. He said he had elected not to race ACME OF SURPRISE within 41 days of its last race start as in his opinion the horse is better suited to having its runs spaced at this stage of its career. The Stewards considered the performance of ACME OF SURPRISE unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ACME OF SURPRISE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, ACME OF SURPRISE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. MAGNIFICENT and SMART HORSE were sent for sampling.
