Racing Incident Report

EARL GREY began awkwardly and as a consequence lost ground at the start. Shortly after straightening, SPEEDY FORWARD, which was giving ground, was steadied away from the heels of FRAT RAT which was carried out by SPECIFIC SORCEROR. Shortly after this, SPECIFIC SORCEROR again shifted out and bumped FRAT RAT, causing that horse to become unbalanced. When questioned, G Mossé (WISE CHOICE) said he was of the firm opinion the horse must be ridden quietly and saved to make its run in the Straight. He said for this reason despite racing behind midfield, when FORTUNE DANCER improved around his outside at about the 700 Metres, he elected to remain behind FRAT RAT instead of shifting out to improve, thereby holding FORTUNE DANCER wider. He said he was aware FRAT RAT was following SPEEDY FORWARD and both these horses were at long odds in the race, however, he was hopeful they would carry him forward into the Home Straight. He said as this did not eventuate, he ended up in a rearward position on straightening where he shifted out to obtain clear running. He said WISE CHOICE then closed the race off nicely. G Mossé was told his riding in the middle stages had come under notice and on this occasion in the opinion of the Stewards he had failed to show the initiative expected from a rider of his standing in this town. SPEEDY FORWARD was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, SPEEDY FORWARD was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. The performance of SPEEDY FORWARD, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it must perform satisfactorily and competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SPECIFIC SORCEROR, DYNAMIC FUN and FORTUNE DANCER were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 6 Jan. 2003) :
The performance of SPEEDY FORWARD in this race was considered unacceptable. The post race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. The Senior Veterinary Officer yesterday again examined SPEEDY FORWARD at the stables of Trainer P C Kan. He said at this time the horse was found to be quite stiff and restricted in its hind limb action with significant back pain. It also showed mild inflammation of its left eye.
As previously reported, SPEEDY FORWARD will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and must pass an official veterinary examination before racing again.
