Racing Incident Report

HORSE AROUND and FAMOUS BRAND began awkwardly. NIGHT HUNTER II was slow to begin. From a gate towards the outside, COSMO STAR was a little slow to begin, then was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail. For some distance approaching and passing the 1000 Metres, FAMOUS BRAND raced tight between CHIU CHOW HERO and HORSE AROUND. Near the 600 Metres, CHIU CHOW HERO was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FAIRWAY FINDER and tight inside FAMOUS BRAND which continued to race tight inside HORSE AROUND. On straightening, FAMOUS BRAND, which was held up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of WATCH KING, shifted out in an endeavour to find clear running and in doing so bumped HORSE AROUND. Also on straightening, FAIRWAY FINDER was steadied and shifted in after being disappointed for running between WINWIN COMBINATION and WATCH KING. Near the 300 Metres, FAIRWAY FINDER, which was continuing to have difficulty finding clear running, was steadied and shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of PLEASANT SUCCESS. When FAIRWAY FINDER shifted out, it bumped the hindquarters of WINWIN COMBINATION and turned that horse in. After the 200 Metres, FAIRWAY FINDER, which was continuing to have difficulty finding clear running, was checked when disappointed for running between PLEASANT SUCCESS and WINWIN COMBINATION (Apprentice M W Leung) which shifted back in slightly after initially shifting out. Apprentice M W Leung was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. COSMO STAR and CHIU CHOW HERO, which were following FAIRWAY FINDER, were hampered in consequence. After this incident, FAIRWAY FINDER did not obtain clear running and was not ridden out to the end of the race. After the 200 Metres, CHEVAL D'OR, which was closing the race off, was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of WINWIN COMBINATION. Also after the 200 Metres, Apprentice P H Lo (FAMOUS BRAND) had difficulty pulling the whip which was caught in the end of the reins. Mr T W Leung (NIGHT HUNTER II) explained the horse's form prior to its last race start had been good. He said last start NIGHT HUNTER II was led to the Start by a pony and became very agitated, then after being boxed as is usual an attendant took hold of NIGHT HUNTER II to ensure the horse stood up properly, however, again the horse appeared to resent this and then in the race performed poorly. He said prior to today's race he sought out the Starter and asked again for an attendant to hold NIGHT HUNTER II as softly as possible. He said NIGHT HUNTER II today was unassisted during the preliminary and overall appeared much more relaxed. Mr Leung added W Smith, the rider, advised him prior to today's race that unless absolutely necessary he would refrain from using the whip on the horse as in his opinion last start it did not appreciate being ridden out vigorously with the whip. NIGHT HUNTER II and HORSE AROUND were sent for sampling.
