Racing Incident Report

THE GRAND ROOF began awkwardly and lost ground. DESERT STORM was slow to begin. On jumping, EARL GREY was bumped by CALIFORNIA BISHOP which shifted out after being bumped by CORAJOSO. On jumping, SANBENITO and AGILITY bumped. Making the Home Turn, SANBENITO was held up when racing behind THE GRAND ROOF. On straightening, THE GRAND ROOF was disappointed for running between FRUITY FRUITY and AGILITY. After this, THE GRAND ROOF was shifted back to the inside of FRUITY FRUITY to go forward. Near the 300 Metres, TAKING THE LEAD, which was held up and unable to obtain clear running, clipped the heels of CALIFORNIA BISHOP and stumbled. O Doleuze (ONE MORE ROUND) said he had had discussed where the horse should be ridden prior to the race with the trainer. He said it was thought THE GRAND ROOF would lead and he would trail that horse, however, as a result of THE GRAND ROOF being slow to begin, he took the decision to maintain the lead. He said the horse's recent performances had not been good over shorter distances and therefore it was felt stepping up to 1600 Metres the horse might be better suited ridden further forward as previously it had performed well in this manner over the course and distance. S Dye (IN THE BANK) said it is considered the horse is somewhat one-paced. He said last start the horse sat outside the lead, he went forward to the outright lead on straightening and the horse then did not finish the race off strongly. He said today again the intention had been to lead if the pace of the race was not too fast. He said after beginning well he allowed IN THE BANK to travel forward, however, CALIFORNIA BISHOP and ONE MORE ROUND were hard ridden to maintain the rails in the early stages, he therefore elected to shift across and race beside those horses in the hope that CALIFORNIA BISHOP would press on to the outright lead and then he would be able to shift in and race outside of it in a two wide position. He said when this did not occur, he then attempted to find cover behind CALIFORNIA BISHOP, however, TAKING THE LEAD was racing to his outside which prevented him from shifting in, he therefore raced three wide near the lead. He said in the Straight IN THE BANK gave ground noticeably. He said he was unable to explain the horse's poor performance as in his opinion it could not be attributed to racing three wide, however, he did say IN THE BANK raced very "flat" today. He did point out today IN THE BANK seemed unusually relaxed prior to the race when being led to the Start. He said the horse usually is on the toe. IN THE BANK was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of IN THE BANK after the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, IN THE BANK will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. AGILITY and DETERMINATION were sent for sampling. After the race, THE GRAND ROOF was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said THE GRAND ROOF was lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, THE GRAND ROOF will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Also after the race, it was noted TAKING THE LEAD had sustained a laceration to the left hind pastern.
