Racing Incident Report

FAST TRACK was withdrawn on 19.2.04 on veterinary grounds (lame left hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter MASTER MARAUDER. Before being allowed to race again, FAST TRACK will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. On jumping, FLYING KENNY, which was to be ridden in a rearward position, got its head up, shortly afterwards shifted out and bumped MAIN ATTRACTION. TELECOM TYCOON stumbled on jumping, then was bumped by SWEET SMILE which had begun awkwardly and shifted in. MOUNTAIN KING began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall. At the 800 Metres, MOUNTAIN KING was unable to maintain its position inside LUCKY MARAUDING which was racing tight inside TELECOM TYCOON. After the 200 Metres, FLYING KENNY was shifted out to avoid MASTER MARAUDER which was giving ground, then after the 50 Metres was again steadied when close to the heels of MOUNTAIN KING. S Dye (THISTLEJADE) said the intention had been to ride the horse in a rearward position as is usual. He said once previously in its career when racing over 2000 Metres THISTLEJADE began best and raced in a forward position. He said today THISTLEJADE began quickly from the barrier, he did not ride along in the initial stages, then after travelling about 50 Metres he rode the horse along for a short distance to clear runners to his inside to avoid being obliged to race wide without cover. He said it was not his intention to be as far forward, however, the horse through its own doing meant that it travelled behind the leader. When questioned regarding the pace he set in the lead on MASTER MARAUDER, Apprentice K T Yeung said he had been instructed to lead on the horse as is usual. He said in the early stages he rode MASTER MARAUDER along to ensure he properly cleared THISTLEJADE and NOBLE WIND which were racing to his inside after the 1400 Metres. He said after reaching the lead, he was mindful not to steady the tempo too rapidly, he therefore dropped his hands on the neck of MASTER MARAUDER and allowed it to continue on at its own speed. He said he did not properly realise the pace at which he was running the field along, but this was nothing more than a misjudgement on his behalf. The Stewards advised Apprentice Yeung in their opinion the pace he set on MASTER MARAUDER clearly lacked judgement and he should gain a better understanding of pacing. T Mundry (COUNTRY DRAGON) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position as is usual. He said because of the pace of today's race the horse got much further back than he had anticipated and despite being ridden out in the early part of the Straight did not respond and therefore over the concluding stages he did not persevere with the horse when it commenced to hang in. He said after the race COUNTRY DRAGON appeared to be blowing quite hard. C Williams (SWEET SMILE) explained he placed his mount under pressure near the 600 Metres, however, it immediately commenced to give ground. He said prior to straightening he became concerned with the horse's action and in particular its right front leg. He said on straightening he commenced to ease the horse down, the horse then became unbalanced when buffeted between NOBLE WIND which was shifting out and THISTLEJADE which was endeavouring to hold its position on its outside. He said after this he eased SWEET SMILE out of the race. SWEET SMILE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, SWEET SMILE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. The performance of SWEET SMILE was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SWEET SMILE will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MAIN ATTRACTION and TELECOM TYCOON were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of MAIN ATTRACTION after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, TELECOM TYCOON was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being permitted to race again, TELECOM TYCOON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LUCKY MARAUDING and NOBLE WIND were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 23 February 2004)
BEING FAMOUS was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C S Shum this morning. He said the horse was lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, BEING FAMOUS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
