Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, it was noted ADVANCE AHEAD had sustained a laceration to its mouth. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who passed it suitable to race. FAMOUS BRAND began awkwardly. HORSE AROUND began awkwardly, bumped the outside gate of its stall and then was further hampered by JOIN SUCCESS which was carried in by CHIU CHOW HERO. Shortly after the start, SOLINUS and WINWIN COMBINATION became unbalanced when crowded for room inside ADVANCE AHEAD which shifted in and made contact with WINWIN COMBINATION. In this incident, ADVANCE AHEAD became unbalanced behind. In the middle stages, CHIU CHOW HERO proved difficult to settle and shortly after straightening was steadied away from the heels of WINWIN COMBINATION, then approaching the 200 Metres had difficulty obtaining a clear run between BULLISH KID and SUPERSONIC. To obtain a clear run after the 200 Metres, CHIU CHOW HERO was then shifted to the inside of BULLISH KID. When endeavouring to improve between SUPERSONIC and BULLISH KID, CHIU CHOW HERO was accidentally struck across the head by the whip of S Dye (SUPERSONIC). After the 400 Metres, HORSE AROUND was steadied and shifted to the inside of SOLINUS to obtain clear running, then after the 100 Metres was checked severely when disappointed for running inside PEACH BLOSSOM which was racing tight inside TABBRIS (D Dunn) which shifted in. After the 200 Metres, ADVANCE AHEAD endeavoured to shift to the inside of TABBRIS to obtain clear running. Near the 150 Metres, ADVANCE AHEAD was checked when disappointed for running between SOLINUS and TABBRIS which shifted in. The Stewards were satisfied neither HORSE AROUND nor ADVANCE AHEAD had lost running which they had established when checked, therefore they did not consider D Dunn to be in breach of the rules, however, he was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount to provide greater protection to his fellow riders. Over the concluding stages, PEACH BLOSSOM raced tight inside TABBRIS which continued to shift in. When questioned, Mr D A Hayes, trainer of TABBRIS, offered the following explanation for the improved performance of the horse today. He said TABBRIS appreciated the drop back to Class 5 and the drop back to 1200 Metres. He did point out TABBRIS had previously been placed over 1600 Metres, however, in his opinion it was better suited over 1200 Metres. Mr Hayes added in recent times he had been somewhat easy on TABBRIS in track work as he was doubtful it would secure a start in today's field. When he entered the horse, he was of the opinion it would most probably be balloted to the reserve list. The explanation submitted by Mr Hayes was accepted. M Kinane (NIGHT HUNTER II) explained he had been instructed not to use the whip unless considered absolutely necessary. He said he believed these instructions to be consistent with the manner in which the horse had been recently ridden. He said after straightening he shifted NIGHT HUNTER II out, however, the horse failed to respond to his riding, therefore approaching the 200 Metres he hit it twice with the whip to see if the horse would respond. He said however NIGHT HUNTER II did not show any response, therefore he rode his mount out hands and heels. NIGHT HUNTER II was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of NIGHT HUNTER II after the race did not show any significant findings. HORSE AROUND was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, HORSE AROUND was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was making an abnormal breathing noise and an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, HORSE AROUND will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TABBRIS and PEACH BLOSSOM were sent for sampling.
