Racing Incident Report

While being saddled, KID GALAXY shifted its right front plate. The horse was re-plated, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and considered suitable to race. After being boxed, GOLDEN MAPLE became fractious and broke out the back gate of its stall. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and considered suitable to race. GOLDEN MAPLE was slow to begin. WAIALAE WIN was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was bumped by MADE IN HONGKONG which on jumping shifted out. Shortly after the start, HIGH SKY was steadied when crowded for room between WADADELIGHT and KID GALAXY which momentarily shifted in. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, WAIALAE WIN was bumped by WADADELIGHT which shifted in. Making the first turn, HIGH SKY was steadied when crowded for room between DOLBRIDGE and KID GALAXY which shifted in when being steadied away from the heels of WADADELIGHT. In the early stages, KID GALAXY, which had drawn a wide gate, was steadied and shifted across behind runners to race with cover. Near the 700 Metres, SHOW BRAVELY (M Rodd) attempted to shift out from behind MADE IN HONGKONG. At the same time, WAIALAE WIN (D Whyte) held its line behind GOLDEN MAPLE, this resulted in SHOW BRAVELY and WAIALAE WIN racing tight for some distance. During this incident, the right elbow of D Whyte came into contact with the left arm of M Rodd. D Whyte was told on numerous occasions he has previously been advised to refrain from the practice of having his elbow shifted out from his body and whilst the Stewards were satisfied on this occasion he has not breached the Rule, he was advised in slightly different circumstances his action may place him in breach of a serious rule. At the 700 Metres, MADE IN HONGKONG was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SOARING ANGEL. At the same time, SPECTACULAR HIT was momentarily steadied away from the heels of LA MERVEILLE. D Whyte was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that shortly after straightening he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of SHOW BRAVELY, causing that horse to be crowded for room, lose its rightful running and be checked. When SHOW BRAVELY was being crowded, inconvenience was caused to SOARING ANGEL which when giving ground became unbalanced. D Whyte was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday 4 April 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday 17 March 2004. For a considerable distance after the 400 Metres, HIGH SKY was held up and unable to obtain clear running. At the 250 Metres, DANEFACTOR, which was giving ground, was steadied away from the heels of LA MERVEILLE. O Doleuze (SPECTACULAR HIT) explained after the 600 Metres he rode his mount along in an endeavour to maintain his position between MADE IN HONGKONG and TEAM WIN, however, the horse was reluctant to do so. He said making the Home Turn SPECTACULAR HIT continued to give up its position and got back to second last on straightening. He said in the early part of the Straight he ensured SPECTACULAR HIT was properly balanced, he then commenced to ride the horse along, it responded, however, near the 200 Metres he was obliged to check to avoid the heels of SOARING ANGEL which was giving ground. The explanation submitted by O Doleuze was accepted. When questioned regarding the improved performance of MADE IN HONGKONG, Mr C S Shum, trainer of the horse, explained following the horse's most recent start, A Marcus, who had ridden the horse, advised him in his opinion it would be better suited when racing over a distance of greater than 1650 Metres which it had on that occasion. Mr Shum explained he did not do anything different with MADE IN HONGKONG following that race, he again attempted to engage A Marcus to ride the horse, however, when he was unavailable, Mr Shum then sought the services of other senior riders who were also unable to take the engagement. He said after consultation with the owners, it was decided to engage Apprentice C K Tong to ride the horse today. He said he instructed Apprentice Tong that he anticipated the pace of today's race would be satisfactory, he therefore should attempt to obtain a position behind the leaders if possible. He told Apprentice Tong he should keep pushing at MADE IN HONGKONG to ensure he maintained his position throughout the race. Mr Shum said he had advised the connections prior to today's race that he felt the horse was at best a place chance. The explanation of Mr Shum was accepted. W Smith (TEAM WIN) said he had been instructed to drop the horse in, ride it where it was comfortable and give it a chance. He said he understood this to mean to allow the horse to begin and then race somewhere around midfield with cover. He said TEAM WIN began well, he then rode along for a short distance after the start to clear runners to his inside and obtain a position on the fence. He said he then dropped his hands on the horse in the hope that runners would improve around his outside and allow him to take up a midfield position. He said approaching the first turn LA MERVEILLE commenced to shift in and he was concerned he was in an awkward position, he therefore rode along at this point to avoid being possibly interfered with and placed in a dangerous position. He said after this he again steadied TEAM WIN and near the 1000 Metres allowed DANEFACTOR to go forward of him, then cross and provide him with cover, however, he was further forward than he had been instructed. Mr S T Wong, the trainer of TEAM WIN, said he had told W Smith to ride the horse from the back as previously when being ridden forward the horse had failed to finish its races off. W Smith was told that where circumstances permit he must ride according to the instructions he has been issued by the trainer. TEAM WIN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, TEAM WIN was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, TEAM WIN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WAIALAE WIN, MADE IN HONGKONG and SHOW BRAVELY were sent for sampling. After the race, A Marcus reported that SOARING ANGEL was making an abnormal breathing noise. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination was carried out and no significant findings were detected.
