Racing Incident Report

While being saddled, it was noted BRILLIANT PALACE had sustained a mild abrasion to the left hind pastern. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and considered suitable to race. CONGEE KING began awkwardly, then shortly afterwards lost further ground when crowded for room between OPTIC FIT which shifted out and LEAD TO WIN which was carried in by SOLINUS which in turn had been carried in by ADVANCE AHEAD which on jumping shifted ground. When the gates opened, BRILLIANT PALACE bounded in the air and lost ground. COSMO STAR was slow to begin, then bumped the hindquarters of PLEASANT SUCCESS. In the early stages, SPARKLE, which had drawn the outside gate, was caught wide and without cover. Near the 600 Metres, SUNNY DESERT and SOLINUS bumped. NAOMERIC TE SPECSO, which was following SOLINUS, was inconvenienced in consequence. On straightening, ELEGANCE was carried wider by NAOMERIC TE SPECSO which shifted to the outside of SOLINUS. For the major part of the Straight, PLEASANT SUCCESS was held up and unable to obtain clear running between OPTIC FIT and TOP OF THE CROWN, both of which were giving ground. Because of this, PLEASANT SUCCESS was not tested. For some distance after the 300 Metres, COSMO STAR was held up and unable to obtain clear running between TOP OF THE CROWN and MONEY EXPRESS. M Rodd (LEAD TO WIN) was fined $2,000 for making a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post. Mr B K Ng, the trainer of LEAD TO WIN, explained about four weeks after the horse last raced on 3 December 2003, it suffered a colic attack and because of this he decided to give the horse a let-up. He said since resuming work LEAD TO WIN had been working satisfactorily and had trialed only fairly on 2 March 2004. He said because of this trial and the horse is better suited to racing on the All Weather surface, he did not give it a strong chance in today's race. Mr Ng said he believed the horse's improved performance could be attributed to the drop in class today. The explanation submitted by Mr Ng was accepted. NAOMERIC TE SPECSO, LEAD TO WIN and ELEGANCE were sent for sampling.
