Racing Incident Report

RAIDER was slow to begin. HELENE VITALITY began awkwardly, got its head up, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of AIN'T HERE. DR MORE and TIBER began awkwardly. SUPREME RABBIT began awkwardly and got its head up. Near the 1400 Metres, SUPREME RABBIT and DR MORE were crowded for room inside the heels of PALETTE NATURAL. In the early stages, SUPREME RABBIT proved difficult to settle and near the 800 Metres improved its position inside the heels of TIBER which at that time was racing inside INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS which was shifting in. TIBER then shifted away from INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS across the running of SUPREME RABBIT which was checked. No action was taken. After the 700 Metres, SUPREME RABBIT was checked when crowded for room inside PALETTE NATURAL which was racing tight inside RIVER DANCER which got its head on the side and shifted in away from RAIDER which itself shifted in momentarily. In the circumstances, the Stewards did not believe blame for this incident could be attributed to one rider and therefore no action was taken. In the early part of the Straight, VISORHILL was held up and unable to obtain clear running behind DARWIN and inside NATIVE DREAM. When questioned, R Fradd (GEM OF INDIA) explained carrying 133 lbs and racing over 1800 Metres for the first time today, he intended to ride the horse quietly to ensure it was properly balanced in order to run out the distance of today's race. He said accordingly on jumping he allowed GEM OF INDIA to drift to a rearward position. He said after the 600 Metres he shifted out to follow AIN'T HERE, but still remained racing with cover. When further questioned, R Fradd said previously GEM OF INDIA had shown itself to possess a relatively short sprint and not to be suited by reaching the lead too soon. He said because of this in the early part of the Straight despite a run being available forward of him between RIVER DANCER and RAIDER, he was reluctant to ride GEM OF INDIA along vigorously in an attempt to improve into this run as in his opinion to have done so would have meant in the circumstances of today's race GEM OF INDIA would not have finished the race off. He said at about the 350 Meters RAIDER commenced to shift in and at the same time RIVER DANCER shifted out, he therefore shifted GEM OF INDIA back in closer to the rail where in his opinion today's results had shown the ground to be superior. He said when he shifted in, he commenced to ride along hands and heels to follow INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS, however, GEM OF INDIA commenced to hang in and proved difficult for him to shift out. He said he continued to ride GEM OF INDIA along hands and heels in the run to the line and the horse in his opinion finished the race off only fairly, particularly in relation to INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS. R Fradd was told his riding in the early part of the Straight had been of concern to the Stewards and in similar circumstances he would be expected to improve into runs which are available to him particularly at such vital stages of the race. RAIDER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, it was reported that RAIDER had bled from both nostrils. TIBER, VISORHILL and DARWIN were sent for sampling.
