Racing Incident Report

FLYING DRAGON was slow to begin. On jumping, GOOD BOY got its head up. HAIL WINNER was slow to begin and then on jumping began awkwardly and got its head up. Shortly after the start, KIWI DASH was steadied when crowded for room inside NEW CENTURY which got its head on the side and shifted in. Approaching and passing the winning post on the first occasion, KIWI DASH, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of FLYING DRAGON. After this, KIWI DASH continued to prove difficult to settle. After the race, W M Lai, the rider of KIWI DASH, reported his saddle shifted back on jumping. Making the turn at the 1200 Metres and again at the 1000 Metres, PROFIT DAY got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of GREAT STAR. Prior to straightening, SWEETIE was steadied away from the heels of GOOD BOY. Over the concluding stages, NEW CENTURY hung in. For the major part of the race, SPEED WINNER raced in a forward position but three wide without cover. R Fradd (ELEGANCE) said he had been instructed that if the pace in the early stages was solid, he should attempt to "drop the horse in". He said ELEGANCE began well, he initially allowed it to stride forward, however, it soon became apparent to him that SPEED WINNER which was drawn to his inside was being hard ridden to take up a forward position. He said at the same time GREAT STAR was ridden along on its outside to go forward and he therefore elected to steady his mount in the hope of obtaining cover. He said when he did this, he found himself racing in a five wide position outside NEW CENTURY and to avoid racing unnecessarily wide and without cover, he elected to steady ELEGANCE further and shift in to a position behind NEW CENTURY but with cover. He added in the Straight ELEGANCE finished the race off only fairly. T Mundry (FLYING DRAGON) said the horse travelled satisfactorily until the 600 Metres and when SPEED WINNER improved around his outside, he immediately came under pressure. He said at the 400 Metres FLYING DRAGON commenced to give ground and dropped out badly in the Straight. He did say on pulling up FLYING DRAGON made a substantial abnormal breathing noise. FLYING DRAGON was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, FLYING DRAGON was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination was conducted. He said there were no significant findings. The performance of FLYING DRAGON, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, FLYING DRAGON will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GOOD BOY and SWEETIE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 17 June 2004)
GOOD BOY was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C H Yip this morning. He said at this time the horse was found to be lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, GOOD BOY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
